84 Homeworld - The calm before the storm
Homeworld does huge space battles right, like a Total War game for astronauts. A serious scrap can see hundreds of fighters cutting laser trails through massive battle cruisers, while the big ships death-beam each other into space dust; every second is a screenshot.

Even though the action's incredible, it's the tense calm before the storm that'll stay with you - anxiously panning the camera around the razor-sharp lines of your squadrons flying in perfect formation, like you're shooting an episode of a futuristic Top Gear.

All real-time strategy games have the moment when the orders have been set, the distance between you and the enemy is closing by the second, and all that's left to do is grit your teeth and brace yourself for the explosions. But whether it's the eerie ambient soundtrack, the swooping neon trails, the sensation of full 3D - or just the fact that, as George Lucas taught us all, fighting in space looks really cool - there's no place like Homeworld.
