101 Greatest Gaming Moments, Day One

Our amazing mother of all lists kicks off right here!

Words: GamesRadar US

101 Stuntman - Jumping the chopper
An excellent concept executed with soul and pad crushing sadism, Stuntman is, at its worst, the evil spawn of old father frustration, but at its best the pay-off is almost - almost - worth the pain.

The ridiculousness of navigating a rickety, wobbly-ass tuk-tuk up steps, through buildings and across rooftops makes us giggle, but jumping our three-wheeled cart over the blades of a missile-spitting helicopter is a gratifying spectacle of death-defying lunacy and one that we have savored over and over in the replay.

100 Tony Hawk's Underground - The killer trick
Your whole career in this zero-to-hero skate story builds up to one massive wonder-trick that sees you leap off the top of a very high building in front of a police helicopter. As a payoff for all your hours going through the story and as a spectacle in its own right, this is a superb moment and perhaps the highest point in the series. Quite literally, in fact - how many floors up are we...?

Above: Pikmin's tricolor pikpik carrot look-alikes are some of gaming's cutest 'buddies' and a full, in-bloom platoon is a happy thing indeed.

99 LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy - Flip-top R2-D2
There are plenty of great moments in LEGO Star Wars but the one that encapsulates the franchise best for us is when Princess Leia is trying to put the secret Death Star plans into R2-D2. She holds them out (they're a LEGO brick) but R2D2 shakes his head and beeps.

After a few taps with the brick on his case, Leia hears the Stormtroopers approaching. So she opens R2-D2's head like a pedal bin and throws the brick inside. Wonderful.

98 Pikmin - In full bloom
We're not sure what Nintendo was growing in its greenhouse when it propagated this real-time strategy based on the exploits of a large-nosed astronaut and plant-animal hybrid thingumies, but whatever it was it gave it the flower-powered vision to create one of the sweetest-scented games ever made.

And nothing is quite as sweet as the first time you lead the crash-landed Captain Olimar into the field with a full compliment of flowering red, yellow and blue Pikmin. A sight for sore eyes (made sore by over exposure to gratuitous videogame violence) and a heart-warming moment that still makes us squeal like flamboyant man florists.
