Why WoW players should switch to WAR

Grinding. Grinding. Grinding. Everyone complains about how killing enemies ad nauseam in MMOs sucks. WAR has its fair share of grinding, but it never feels like a grind. Part of it has to do with the way the game cuts out all the unnecessary time sinks.

You'll never find yourself sitting in a field of corpses, waiting for more enemies so you can try to get that fifth hunk of wolf meat to drop. Instead, WAR keeps things fast-paced with a quick respawn rate so you can get your killing done and move on without any unnecessary thumb twiddling.

Death penalties are minor and can be cured by NPC healers in hubs for a low cost. Your health and mana also regenerate quickly after battle, so there's no need for a cooking profession to alleviate downtime between battles.

Above: WAR is the most accessible and hardcore MMO we've played

But the main reason why grinding never feels like a grind in WAR is because everything you do (and we do mean everything), level ups some aspect of your character or contributes to your faction's war efforts. Even when you're just questing on your own, you're still playing an important part in your server's group effort to conquer the other side's capital city. Once that city has been looted, pillaged, and burned to the ground, the server will reset and the epic war will rage on again.

Make no mistake. WoW is awesome it’s not going anywhere. Lord of the Rings: Online is great. And there are elements of Age of Conan that are excellent. But WAR is the best MMO out there right now, and as servers continue to swell with more players it keeps getting better. That's why we've switched to WAR. Anyone who likes fantasy, leveling up, and PvP should consider doing the same. Even if you don't normally like PvP, you will after playing WAR. We simply can't recommend it enough.

Ive played WoW since it came out. I enjoy the smoothness of the game. I also played Warhammer for a while, and while it has some great innovative ideas, I noticed that it had the same problem as dark ages of camelot... it has a feel of stickiness to it. I put down warhammer for now, and am playing WoW again, hoping that either warhammer fixes all their bugs and glitches (theres a lot of them) or another new MMO steps up to the plate. And if your looking for a really deep and funFREE MMO, heres a one you can lookup. Rappelz (this game has a lot to offer for being free to play) that can be found at as well as some other games, but the others are kinda crappy.
  • whiskeyob - October 20, 2008 2:42 p.m.

@Samael-The first reason you give for not wanting to join in the WAR contradicts itself, You say you don't want to abandon you lvl 70 and all time you have spent getting it up to what it is, but you are looking forward to the release of Lich King is will effectively wipe everything you have done since Burning Crusades release and make you start over, Just like BC did. I personally quit WoW and will never touch it again because of the why they Handled their end game with expansions, i had a full t3 60 rogue that i raided like mad to get there, and then they said well we cant do anything else for the end game except make all your gear useless and make you level up again. They basicly kicked everyone in the balls and all the Stupid players were to blinded by new content that they don't know that blizzard just told you that the time you spent the last few years is all worthless.
  • cruelgore - October 20, 2008 3:35 a.m.

To the above post I don't see your point? WoW started as a 90% clone of EQ so what if Doac plays a role in WAR's development. As far as content goes Wow's ingame landmass and in game content was much smaller than it is today as was EQ,UO etc the fact of the matter is lets not turn WoW into a MMO mircosoft.Give WAR a chance in reviews are anything to go by its the best MMO to come out in years.
  • cruelgore - October 17, 2008 8:44 p.m.

I've been playing MMOs since UO I played EQ SWG EQ2 and WoW since its first day and I've left some friends behind each time but that like real life as we all move on to bigger and better things.WoW was a great game in its day it overhalled EQ's crazy epic waitings times and improved the Us vs Them scenario, just like what EQ did to UO! It seems to me this happens in a 3-4 year cycle one smart company learns form another's misgivings and improves the MMO arena for us all.For me WoW started great you could see the war all around you in world pvp but them someone decided to throw it all in BGs at first with Exp then without then without the best items of PvP since Arena.Blizzard got lazy on its fat millions of subscribers and now feeds us all like fat babies with in game candy like Zebra's to ride and chinese olympic dragon pets dam there's even Paris Pilton/Hilton if you wanna handbag to keep you sword shield and pet xmas gnome called tinkerbell in! But in the wow world players have absolutly no impact on their server/game anymore quite honestly WoW isn't true to its name there is no war anymore Ironforge will never belong to orcs and Org will never belong to Dwarves. In wow your just BORG in different shades of green blue and brown. War offers a chance to mould the world around you and in Open rvr noone is really safe anywhere.Wow has had its time and for the good of the MMO community it needs a shakeup like UO and EQ had,to comtinue the evolution of awesome MMOs,to leave WoW unchalledged at the top is selling yourself short.

Ok just to clear things up, Games Workshop invented the green orc, they aren't essentially evil, just bloodthirsty, and of course they enjoy a good fight, if anything they're neutral killing anything they come into contact with. the only way the games workshop orcs are the same to tolkiens are in name.
  • Dysan - October 16, 2008 12:53 a.m.

Forgive the double-post. Lixie, the Greenskins don't have a real gender. They grow from mushrooms and reproduce through fungis. There's no V or P. Just grow and fight. There's females for all the other races, if you absolutely need to be a girl character.
  • Mtheo - October 14, 2008 11:27 a.m.

Well i just quit wow for this game and all i got to say is that WAR is the perfect MMO for me when i picked it up off the shelves and loaded it on my computer i fell in love! i froze my lvl 70 orc rogue and rolled a Black orc. I used to laugh at the orcs in wow becasue the horde looked too nice. When i pulled up the orc in WAR i was like hell yea something evil looking yet comical at the same time. i quickly lvled to 15, i also thought it was cool that i could look really leet at lvl 9 other then waiting till 40 in wow. I also like the fact it shows you WHERE! to go when im doing a quest. So now i can grab every quest i find and then look at my map for the red area. all in all a pro game.
  • Fixya - October 14, 2008 8:40 a.m.

I've played WoW for about 3 years and Warhammer for about 3 weeks and Warhammer walks all over WoW for a lot of reasons, but most of all is all the boring time wasting stuff: * WoW has a lot of quests where you need to collect x number of items that only drop extremely rarely. * Every time you die, you have to run back to your body, which is sometimes a painfully boring thing when attempting something difficult. * You cannot fly anywhere unless you have already been there. (imagine if Qantas did this!) ;-) * You sometimes have a really hard time finding exactly where you need to do a quest, (warhammer shows it on the map.) There's more, but that'll do for now.
  • natewallis807 - October 12, 2008 1:38 a.m.

whats all this about who creating evil orcs and such the thing warhammer created were the GREEN orcs all orcs before we just large dark human things before in fantasies
  • Lixie - October 10, 2008 3:19 a.m.

My chief complaints with WAR are the lack of female goblins and the lack of forums. The game needs to be polished (glitches, bugs, and lag galore), but I'm hopeful that that stuff will be worked out. And as a female gamer I really hate that I have to play a male character in order to play certain classes. That said, I like this game better than WoW -- and I never thought I would say that.
  • Infowar - October 9, 2008 10:13 p.m.

Here's a thought... when the Simpsons came out, it was crudely drawn, not very polished, and had a limited fanbase, but those people loved it because they saw lots of potential in what they liked. Consider the simpsons today. It has amazingly good animation (within its own style), it draws huge stars in for guest appearances, it has become a cultural icon, in fact, very much like World of Warcraft. What people are trying to do, it seems to me, is to compare the early simpsons episodes with the newest ones. This analogy is not perfect, but i think people can see my point: as has been said before, WoW has had years and years to become what it is today. Millions of people pay 15 bucks a month just to be part of its persistent world. Warhammer Online is not yet even a month old yet. In my opinion, based on the quality of WAR at launch, and the sheer FUN of RvR play mechanics, the ease of quests, and the lack of some of the more annoying MMO traits, WAR could, given time, totally eclipse WoW in greatness. that's my 2 brass coins.
  • Jaidyn - October 9, 2008 8:23 p.m.

When WoW came out the EQ loyalists stomped their feet & said NEVER! EQ, DAOC & others trickled into the crack that was WoW. EQOA people even bought PC's that could handle the game. I played WoW since release, loved it & yes its a big time vacuum. I am playing WAR. I haven't ordered WotLK yet either. I enjoyed WoW for PvP but ever since the introductions of BG's it became a grind. I never made HWL, I had a job & family lol. I sadly did hit General though. The more I read about WotLK & PvP the less inclined I am to play it. I love PvP. If I were into PvE I'd play a console game. Thats just my opinion but the majority of people I run into in WAR have similiar opinions. WoW won't disappear overnight. WAR won't crush it. WoW has turned into a PvE game & the majority seem to love that about it. WAR is PvP, it is NOT gold driven either. You don't have to spend time farming for gold. One thing that deserves mentioning is the Guild Tab. I really wish WoW had done something like it a while back. In fact I wish WoW had implemented a lot of the guild features that were being mulled over before. After 4 yrs they came out with a guild vault. They could easily do guild houses. Or maybe Blizz couldn't afford it...HAHAHA Anyway people are going to be loyal to WoW and some to WAR. They'll get into heated arguments about it online. No matter your game or if you're PvE or PvP either is highly addictive & I wish I'd never bought those copies of DAOC, EQOA & then WoW.
  • sgtchin - October 9, 2008 4:07 p.m.

Here is the Deal, Warhammer starts in 80s or w/e. Blizzard tries to buy WH from Gamesworkshop, gamesworkshop says no so instead blizzard makes warCRAFT and makes it very similar to warhammer. blizzard makes wow based of warcraft based of warhammer. mythic makes WAR based of warhammer. That is why the artwork is so similar the look. As for the UI that is all similar becuase its a nobrainer for mythic to make a UI based off of something 8 mil ppl already play (wow), except they have improved on it. Its alot faster paced, no grinding, it essentially removes everything from wow that is boring or tedious, and aims to improve on the rest. Another great thing is they are no a war path to ban all gold sellers/spammers, ZERO tolerance, its great to see a game look after the integrity of the idea. Dont take my word for WAR being better look at all the other reviews, and alot of the negative things ive read a simple things that future patches will no doubt clear up, just as WOW has been years in development, so will this and it wil only get better.
  • drowlich423 - October 9, 2008 4:12 a.m.

WAR is a good game, but I don't think that it is completly better than WoW. Its PvP is much better I'll give it that, but other than that its pretty much the same. Oh, and I would like to point out that warhammer does not do PvE better than WoW, party quests are nice, but suck unless if you have a perfect server, too many people and you dont get loot, to little and you DIE!!!
  • Maylox - October 8, 2008 3:22 p.m.

I disagree. WOW players should stay in WOW. The ones that are trying WAR mostly suck in RVR play. They have no tactical knowledge of how to really RVR. rvr 101: 1. The tank in front of you has probably got at least 1 healer you NEED to kill first. 2. Look for theannoying bright Wizard next, kill it then smash the tank in force. If you can do this come play WAR. If this sounds like sillyness stay in WOW. :))
  • Blackout269 - October 7, 2008 7:13 p.m.

@ the moron Pendola. I love how people have no fucking clue at all what they are talking about. It makes me laugh.. If your game lags- don't be cheap buy a better computer.. Sorry if you can't read unless the next is size 72 font. RvR's are nothing like WoW BGs... Please think before you speak, you are embarrassing your self. I played WoW 2 years straight, 5 70s, t6 later I have found the light. I realized how worthless it was to sit on a game 24-7 because you needed to be "Leet" and get the best gear ever. Staying up untill your eyes bleed just to get the next best thing. Don't let these morons fool you. WAR is really the next big thing. I actually quit WoW after hearing and seeing WOTLK. I knew I needed to make a change in my life. So I sold my account and got 300 bucks out of it. Did that make up for the late nights and the lives lost? No. Don't listen to the haters.. Try it yourself and I guarentee you will be canceling your WoW accounts. This game is really what is said to be in the review on this site. I'm level 26 now and the game is not at all unbalanced and there are plenty of players.. I mean come on.. WoW had such a long time to become the #1 MMO out there. WAR is barely a month out of beta. The team working to fix the bugs is awesome as well. Cudos to them, they release a fix almost everyday. I love this game. It doesn't destroy your life like WoW did. You don't have to rely on end game guilds to have fun. YOu don't have to roll a Druid just to get PvP gear and reach the top of the bracket. Most of my friends on WoW and in real life left all the work they did in WoW to try out something new.. None of us are disappointed. So please, please, ignore the morons on here with an IQ that will label them as Mentally Retarded and try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Have a good day. -Blackout

I didnt say i wouldnt give war a chance , I did say that there is no trial. I play a lot of online games, BF2 , Cod4 , wow , BF1942 etc, Most if not all has had a trail , avail to download from ea . This game does now give that option !! What ive heard so far from people that play wow and have got war online, they said its almost the same in graphics and enjoyable the same as wow. They did however mention that the LAG in game was quite bad. We of course from wow are all in the same boat, There is nothing to do in wow right now , I am in the beta WOTLK and im liking the new area, and its something that i am looking forward too. Now what i would like is to try this game on trial,if i am going to play war im having to pay more than wow and with my husband also playing wow, both of us are having to pay in total £40 every 2 months and thats not including if we decide to get war online. IF EA do decide to have a trial before wotlk i and many others would try and if we did like it, there may be a possiblity that we wont go back to wow. But the dread is that like , wow BF2 and many other online games they do get boring and end up there is nothing more to do....

A Casual Gamer. I've been Playing WoW on and off now since it's release, and have got a Collectors Edition copy of WAR, In my Personal opinion, WAR is superior now to WoW as it is now and will be in the Future but nor for the first Year or so, when WoW was Released it was something new to me and my Freinds (And people who became my Freinds while playing) for the first Year or so everything was WoW, WoW, WoW, but after that first year and ever since, WoW has become, to me and mine at least, a Stagnant Game, everything you do is just Same old, Same old, it's either, boring, imbalanced, Small-time PvP or Raiding, and that get sold after about a Year, and anything they release, any expantion, any new level cap, is not going to change that, I personally at least will not be buying WotLK, as it dosen't interest me whatsoever, I'm more looking forward to FM 09 and Red Alert 3 than WotLK. Now WAR on the other hand is everything i could want from a game, You play it how you like it, it looks fantastic, it's FUN to say the least, and above all, the total feel of the gaem is just So "Right", you almost feel as if you are in a Medievil city as you trudge through the Slums of Altdorf, and when doing the quests it's not just "oh Look, some cartoon cahracter in brightly-coloured glowing armour want's me to kill 100 of these guys, and however anatomically incorrect it will be, 9 out of ten of them wont have the required Livers i need to complete the quest" In WAR the quest's actually have afeel behind them, in the case of a chain in Empire chapter 10 "A Man's Father has betrayed the forces of Order and thrown his lot in with Chaos, but has dissappeared, kill these guys to bring out their leader, then kill him to find out where he's gone, Now, you know the general area, go here to pick up a magic seeking scroll form this person, then return to the area, kill a few of these things and harvest their essence to power it, then find and kill said traitor parent" the game just feels so right, and the Tome of knowledge makes it feel as the gaem is challenging you on an Intellectual level as well, oh yes, if you like that sort of thing, this game actaully requires you to READ! a thing which a vast majority of players in WoW need to learn to do, overall WAR is a superior game, WoW will probably still Dominate the insustry for the Reason's that previous people have Stated, It's what they know, why try something new, when they're happy with what they have, all their freinds are there, which i totally understand, it was very difficult to leave my pals the times i layed of WoW, But WAR will always be there, sitting on the edges waiting to take its Choppa to WoW's Legs, then shove it ina barrel, and chuck it off a Bridge....WAAAAAGGHHH!!!! -BarnaclePD
  • ChuckD - October 6, 2008 8:26 p.m.

@taro2012 Actually, the first 30 days are included in the price. Says it right on the box. I use to play WoW. I started when it first came out but played it off and on after the first year. Mainly just did PvP. Never did like raiding. One of the things that make me love WAR so much is that you can PvP right off the bat. You'll only have 1 or 2 abilities but you still can because the boost your stats to lvl 8 for the Scenario. PQ's are pretty damn awesome too. They're sorta like mini-dungeons. WAR also eliminated grinding for me. The only time I find myself grinding is when there's no one around for a PQ and I want some loot in it.
  • quoman - October 6, 2008 7:41 p.m.
