Whedon in line to direct Runaways

No, not the Kristen Stewart/Dakota Fanning biopic of ‘70s girl band The Runaways.

Both Peter Sollett and Joss Whedon have been linked to a film adaptation of Brian K Vaughan’s Runaways , a comic series first published by Marvel in 2003.

The series follows a group of teenagers who find out that their parents are part of an evil organisation known as Pride.

The kids become a dysfunctional family unto themselves, stealing weapons from their parents and discovering they have their own special abilities.

Deadline report that Peter Nick & Norah ’s Sollett is in the running to direct, while The Playlist state it’s Joss Buffy The Vampire Slayer Whedon who is the favourite to helm the film version.

Whedon’s an obvious choice, considering he wrote the series’ second volume, and therefore knows the material inside out. But it perhaps smacks of wishful thinking, and we know Whedon often has trouble with material that isn’t originally his own.

Deadline describe the film was “ The Breakfast Club with superheroes”, which is a slightly reductive but nice-sounding description.

Whoever gets the director’s chair, the Runaways film could end up being the new X-Men , with its cast of colourful, superpowered teens. Can it beat First Class into production? More when we get it.

Sollett or Whedon? You decide...
