What's your favourite fighting game - is it... Mortal Kombat?

If you're a gamer, the GamesMaster Golden Joystick Awards need no introduction. Which is great for us because it means we can skip the bit about them being the only gaming awards that matter because they're the only gaming awards that are voted for by gamers.

Voting for this year's awards has already begun. If you haven't voted, you can do that right now by visiting the GamesMaster Golden Joystick Awards voting page.

In the meantime, to get everyone feeling sexy and excited for the awards, we'll be highlighting each of the categories in turn. Today, we're looking with feverish anticipation at the Fighting, MMO and Racing nominations.

Category: Fighting

Who are we voting for?

Cundy: "Fight Night Champion. Have to say that I absolutely loved the story mode. Also, I've always been a bit of a crap button-basher when it comes to fighting games, so have always preferred Fight Night's hitty-with-the-sticky controls."

Dave: "BlazBlue. Because SSFIV: AE isn't a big enough update to justify my vote, and although it will beat your face in with its difficulty at first, Blaz is one of the best technical fighters around."

Nathan: "Marvel vs Capcom 3. Not only does it allow me to batter Ryu with Wolverine, but it also introduced me to the brilliant Deadpool."

Category: MMO

Who are we voting for?

Cundy: "Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. Voting for this purely because it lets players choose a 'Bear Shaman' character. Not sure what a bear shaman is, but I'm hoping it's an actual bear that does magic tricks."

Dave: "Eve, for its insane depth and the fact that it looks and sounds really pretty."

Nathan: "DC Universe Online. Why? Batman. ‘nuff said."

Category: Racing

Who are we voting for?

Cundy: "Dirt 3. I'm not much into cars and driving and Jeremy Clarkson, but I've always got a bit of time for a lengthy Dirt session."

Dave: "Dirt 3, because of its perfect balance of arcade accessibility and hardcore skill demands, and because Nintendo still hasn't put out a new F-Zero."

Nathan: "Dirt 3 is easily the pick of the bunch thanks to an absolutely incredible engine and stellar handling."

So that's whose getting our Fighting, MMO and Racing votes. How about you lovely people? Feel free to share your choices in the comments. And join us again on Monday when we'll be looking at the Action/Adventure, Sports and Music-based categories.

wait, so it has to have been released in 2011? well, I guess that kinda disqualifies my opinion... on ALL of these categories.

I'm a fan of driving games, always have been, but I've never played a Dirt title. I can only blame a combination of not enough money and too many good releases, but if Dirt 3 is still getting adoration from every critic under the sun then perhaps it's time to pick it up... And yeah MK kicked shedloads of ass, but I haven't played Blazblue either so I have no idea which is better...MK gets my vote over MvC3 though, if only because the single player is such a better experience.

The problem with this poll is that it is only dealing with brand new titles, when sometimes, the things that happened years ago are still by far the best possible version. For example, who the hell would play any of these MMO's when there are thousands of MUD's out there, all with 100% more of an entertainment factor than anything in the graphical market. The correct answer is Malevolence MUD

Mortal Kombat! Got my vote, best single player modes i have even seen in a fighting game... period. My second choice was DOA dimensions and I was happy to see it get nominated.

My vote goes to Mortal Kombat, i just love how they did the new game.

I voted for Mortal Kombat because I have always loved the series even when the games were not that great. I also haven't played MvC 3 yet so I hope I can play it soon.

Mortal Kombat is the obvious win. I have it and it's f*cking amazing. And anyway, I would rather be playing an outrageously fun and gory fighter than a Japanese fighting game with hideous anime graphics (I'm looking at you, BlazBlue!). I won BlazBlue Calamity Trigger for writing the Star Letter in OXM UK. As soon as I started playing, I hated it. I won the fights too easily and the graphics were an immediate turn-off for me. MK on the other hand, had the full package, including an extremely long story mode, a beefy challenge tower and an online mode too. Playing Mortal Kombat took me back to the late 90s when I used to play MK 3 (I think) with my dad. Ah, those were the days.

You sir are an ass hat. Hideous anime graphics? have you even played it? The art style of the blazblue series has been one of my favourite of this generation and I can't take anyone seriously with a black ops avatar.

What can you expect with an avatar like that.. BlazBlue all the way!
  • jmcgrotty - September 10, 2011 2:38 a.m.

The real problem with his statement is that it was redundant. All Anime looks like crap. Didn't have to single out any specific games. It's a genre/style problem.

some must have been playing on beginner turn the difficulty up to hell and say that its easy, also the graphics are beautiful sprites with great 3d back rounds and Both CT and CS have massive 24 hour long story modes if you are the type of person who watches every cut scene i could go on about how BB is currently the best fighting games series but i feel its unnecessary.
  • CitizenWolfie - September 9, 2011 6:36 a.m.

My vote went to Mortal Kombat purely because it was so much fun to play and the massive story mode was a surprising but welcome addition. I enjoyed MvC3 but out of protest against Capcom's constant "updates" (ie, a full priced new boxed game update) I refuse to vote for them any more. Fight Night was a close contender though...

I like how you guys ask us if our favorite fighting game is Mortal Kombat and then you all vote for completely different fighting games. I haven't played any 2011 racers or MMOs (they are genres I rarely play), and although I don't play very many fighters, I have played Mortal Kombat and thought it was pretty good. So I guess my fighting vote goes to them (even if it's by virtue of being the only fighting game on that list that I've played, but still; it was pretty good).
  • NightCrawler_358 - September 9, 2011 4:35 a.m.

I gotta say something. I loved MvC2, and 3, when it came out. I'm also a big fan of SF and Marvel, so its the perfect fit, right? Now, I don't enjoy it so much. I just get tired of sitting watching while i get tossed easily into a 100 hit combo, with no way to break it. Its more of a match of: You throw me into a combo, I throw you into one, then repeat. Anyway, Mortal Kombat for me, because SF4 AE didn't add enough. (of course SSF4 is still the best fighting game out there.)
  • birdro - September 9, 2011 4:06 a.m.

INTRODUCED you to Deadpool? As in just this year? I am dissapoint. I suppose this is one of the first games where his personality really comes through, but dissapoint. Either way I've already been in to vote, Blazblue CS, DC Universe and... I completely forget what my racing vote was for.
  • taokaka - September 9, 2011 4:33 a.m.

I would have never guessed from your profile pic that you would of voted blazblue and you would have probably never guessed I've done the exact same.
