What the hell is Dragon Quest?

To many non-Japanese gamers this affection may seem baffling - a shame, considering that the series is pretty much responsible for reinventing the RPG.

Inspired by the dominating US RPG offerings of the early '80s, Ultima and Wizardry, series creator Yuji Horii set about simplifying turn-based battle RPGs by removing the Dungeons and Dragons angle that alienated less hardened gamers and non-beard wearers. Horii turned to games designing after impressing Enix (before they merged with Square) in a programming competition, leaving his previous career as a freelance writer – although it was this background in writing that helped him imbue Dragon Quest with compelling and accessible storytelling.
