Six teens from a deprived area of Leeds embrace the heartfelt, politicised expression of slam poetry in this gently unassuming but powerful documentary.

First-time directors Alex Ramseyer-Bache and Daniel Lucchesi follow the team as they prepare to take the stage at the world championships in Washington DC.

Among them is Maryam, a 16-year-old Muslim out to counter stereotypes about her culture. Then there’s respected team captain Saju, who narrowly avoided school expulsion.

We root for these hugely likeable young artists as they develop impressive voices for their anguish and ideals, and share in their suspense as the big day arrives.
