WARNING: Far Cry 2 is still a broken game

So you don’t think we’re blowing smoke, head on over to the official Far Cry 2 forums and search just how many threads have been started by forum members about corrupted game saves or game freezes. Let’s give you a head start: here for 360 owners, here for PS3 owners, here for the dedicated for the save game issue, and here for a title update, which was announced January 12. If you don’t like clicking around, take a look at some of these posts from Community Developers kimi_ and Atmon.

January 12, 2009
“We are happy to announce that we collected some information to share with you about our upcoming Xbox 360 patch.

This patch will include a lot of improvements especially on the multiplayer side; with better browsing features, more multiplayer game options, and other new additions in order to let you play the game, the way you want.

Please take note that this list is just a preview showing element that are currently done. Other elements in polishing will be revealed soon.”

There is zero mention of a patch to fix the bugs.

January 14, 2009
In response to these questions posted on the forums regarding a multiplayer patch:

1) Why did Ubisoft release overpriced DLC for a game that does not work?
2) Why have multiplayer fixes been prioritized over the broken single player game?

“1) For comment on the DLC feel free to use the dedicated thread.
2) Our top priority has always been fixing bugs, other adding content. Therefore this work is separate in different teams. So even if our top goal is to ensure that everyone is able to play the game in good conditions, we still want to maximize our community experience on the game, that's why we are doing our best to take everyone's opinion into account

When it comes to bug, nothing is that simple. It's not like adding content our improving an engine. It’s about finding out why a problem occurs, how it occurs, and then solves it. So we are definitely using our resources to work on that, and we hope we will be able to correct those problems ASAP.

Thank you for your patience.”

January 22, 2009
“A lot of you are wondering what is happening with the corrupt save bug that causes the player to get stuck at a couple of different completion percentages. Ever since we received the first feedback on this from our support team and forums we’ve being investigating the issue.

As usual our primary objective was to collect as much relevant information as possible through forums, customer support and so on. We managed to gather a lot of corrupted save games from console and PC users. Unfortunately, all of that data wasn’t helping to understand how the corruption occurs, only what the effect of the corruption was. After trying different hardware and settings for weeks we recently managed to reproduce the bug on a development kit. We are currently repeating the same steps on retail consoles and on PC. After that, we will be able to move on to the next stage where our studio team works on a solution for all platforms.

We fully appreciate that it’s a frustratingly long wait for those of you experiencing this bug. We’re keen to resolve this issue for you as soon as possible and we are absolutely committing all the resources we can towards achieving this.”

March 5, 2009
“We are still working on getting the title update out to you, but wanted to give you a quick update on the corrupt saved game issue. We have been working on it since it was first reported, and are happy to report that the issue has been identified. We are working on incorporating a fix into the upcoming title update, however please be advised that the fix *may* only be for new saves created after installing the TU. We understand that it is frustrating to lose all those hours put into a saved game (believe us, we ourselves have had to physically play to the point of corruption over and over during troubleshooting), and thank you for your patience as we worked to identify the cause. More information on the fix will be available when the TU is ready for release.”

Apparently, you may need to restart the entire game in order for the title update to work correctly, or rather, in order for you to play the game without fault (hopefully).

March 12
“This new patch wave will features some major change on our engine, with weapon balance, hardcore mode, improvements on servers and database (and some other features we will reveal soon).

It means a lot of work and testing on our side (all improvements will be share by Xbox 360, PC, PS3), the good news is that we are done with our tests, and we will be able to share a release date with you soon.

I just want you to know that our team is working hard in order to provide a solid patch to increase your multiplayer experience.”

March 13
“Beyond that, there’s no further new information about [the title update patch] but we’ll get it to you for sure as soon as things are set.”

April 1
Community Developer Atmon did respond to a private inquiry of ours, stating
“An update is still on track with several new features and enhancements, as well as fixes like any good big patches.”

OK, to start, DjDue, your a moron. I am, sorry, WAS, playing Farcry2. And the glitches, or 'bug' is extremely bloody real in the single-player mode. i have 76% of the trophies, and wanted to finish it on infamous. yet, when the barge is dead in the water and you have to help the respective 'buddy', instead of being upstairs on the barge, she is down stairs, and i cannot interact with her. i have tried every avenue of attack to try and stop this happening, but nothing works. so hence, i am stuck in the game, mid-mission, with no way to finish the dam thing. so this 'bug'is VERY real. and very effing annoying. like your ignorance.

Never thought a game could contain a glitch until I played Farcry 2.At first, thought it was something to do with the memory card because it froze during save.Memory card was near full so purchased new one with more memory.[yes, cheaper 360 using cards].Tried the game again ending with same result.3/4 the way through, freezes during save.Pissed me off because I like the game and want to finish it.Had the same problem with Bioshock.

i bought it, and the first time i played through, i found a huge glitch at exatcly 14% the glitch was that when you must kill the king of northern africa or go to Oasis, the king was not even there! you could here him talking to you from close up but he was invisible. and then i decided to go to Oasis instead, but the place marked on the map was a BLACK HOLE! i had to restart the game. currently at 56% with no glitched

Mr. Patterson let me retract that statement, you've already done your work in that regard.(360 broken) My regrets for implying otherwise. If you stand by the title of the article because you believe that to be the definition of broken then I have no gripes.
  • GamesRadarShanePatterson - April 8, 2009 7:17 p.m.

I'm very comfortable in saying that bugs and glitches keeping people from finishing the game is equal to the game being broken. What's a common problem in journalism? Writing a headline that makes sense and gets you to read the article? Or did you think it was too sensational? "If you stand by it then your next article should be xbox 360 broken- its well documented to have a higher failure rating than this bug in this game." I have written about the xbox 360 being broken... many times in fact. Not only did I write about it in this article, I also wrote about it in "Biggest Unfulfilled Promises in Gaming." http://www.gamesradar.com/f/biggest-unfulfilled-promises-in-gaming/a-2009012193834852054 The difference is that Microsoft rectified the problem by owning up to the mistake eventually and changing their warranty policy. Granted it took a long time, but they did. Ubisoft has not.

holy shit? its busted? works perfectly for me... i never finished it though...
  • CH3BURASHKA - April 8, 2009 5:47 p.m.

I 'downloaded' it, and it was fine; mad generic though. That ending was way more touching than I thought. reCaptcha: Nardon t9

You owned a Mustang? I own a 1959 Edsel. Oh look! That was a completely irrelevant statement by both of us! Turns out, the GR fellow who posted said scenario-example was referring to a 5-10% rate of failure in a car model, yes? So you had to work on a Mustang... whoopie. Change the oil in it or something? What the scenario was stating was that if 5-10% of a specific model had a serious problem (wheel falling off?), it wouldn't matter if the remaining 90-95% were fine. Same with the game mentioned. You may be able to complete it, but the 5-10% that do not are going to get rather annoyed by it. Let's go back to the car, shall we? If the wheel of your car were to fall off - would you buy another model from that company? I sure wouldn't. If the game you thought would be awesome turns out to glitch like crazy - would you buy another from same developer? I doubt that, as well. To disclaim that the PlayStation 3 is flawless running this game is a huge misconception. Why would anyone make a game, let it work on "God's console of choice", and then give the bird to anyone who doesn't own said console? I believe your 'points' are very loose and could do with some tightening up. Like others' have said, a glitch is not a "Let's f*ck with our gamers and make the game freeze.... here!" No. It is a hit-or-miss thing that only occurs if something specific happens. As it turns out, our target is an elephant and we're twenty meters away - much higher hit than miss rate. It's all just a matter of luck, really. If/when this word spreads to these peoples' friends (as I know I'll tell mine), their friends are going to be looking at the game shelf in a store thinking "Will this copy screw me over, or will it be a rare, non-glitched one?" No one wants that kind of thought going through them when they buy something! "Will this vehicle fall apart while I'm driving like I've heard, or will it be a decent vehicle?" There. I did another example for you. This is my last paragraph! Woo! The only point in this one is fairly simple - If you try to argue with me, I'll be ignoring you. Just go back and play the console that Christ supposedly has given to you. END TRANSMISSION

I have Far Cry 2 for my PS3 and after three, (count'm) three attempts to play through the game, I quit completely. So many glitches I put up with just to get completely screwed. I'll never play a Ubisoft game again.
  • jar-head - April 8, 2009 4:26 a.m.

Please follow this until the problem is solved GR, thanks
  • frag - April 8, 2009 3:11 a.m.

even at 20$, they still sell you broken game. Would you pay for a TV that only shows in black and white? Would you buy a bike with one missing wheel? no. How can a major game company pull out this kind of crap? We dont pay for mediocrity, but for playable games. Get your money right. Play fallout 3.
  • ELpork - April 8, 2009 2:45 a.m.

    Maybe that's why its $20
  • djdue - April 8, 2009 2:21 a.m.

I owned a Mustang so I know something about crappy cars. I never knew anyone who didn't have to get their Mustang fixed. Doesn't mean its a broken car model. Here we have a game you say is broken but lots of people like me have played through it with no problems. Works pretty well for a broken game.
  • GearsofRabies - April 8, 2009 1:37 a.m.

hmmm I finished the game all the way through and played it long afterwards and I haven't experienced one bug or crash. color me lucky I guess.
