A long-running omission from the series has been damage modeling, but creator Kazunori Yamauchi has talked about including not only damage but a dynamic crash model, both of which could dramatically change the classic gameplay. Since we're used to using other cars as bumpers with no damage penalty, a more realistic approach would force long-standing drivers to reassess their strategies. Sadly, online gameplay (the series' other glaring omission) remains a mystery.


The increased ability to handle moving detail is also evident in the pit crews and audience stands. As the few official screenshots demonstrate, there are dozens of people milling around in addition to the exhaustingly detailed crew itself. We hope that some of the repeated persons in the shots are placeholders, and that the crews for each team will be as visually distinct as the cars they race.
