Virgin Media buys The Sarah Connor Chronicles - and Star Trek

Looks like the landscape of UK sci-fi telly could be changing rather radically, thanks to the news that Virgin is to plough a reputed £40 million a year into its new entertainment Channel Virgin 1.

What's more, the first lot of programming they've acquired includes a slate of SF - which rather undermines Sky One's status as the first choice for sci-fi fans.

Virgin's most interesting acquisition is Warner's Terminator spin-off The Sarah Connor Chronicles (starring Lena Headey and Firefly's Summer Glau). But they have also acquired the rights to the entire Star Trek franchise from Paramount.

When Virgin 1 launches, it will be available on Freeview (replacing the FTN channel).
