Filmmaker Pierre-Yves Borgeaud assumes anyone watching his doc is acquainted with Brazilian bossa nova legend Gilberto Gil.
For the uninitiated, 71-year-old Gil is one of Brazil’s most popular and lauded musical exports, and has recently returned to performing after serving as his country’s Minister of Culture.
Viramundo takes Gil around his own land and to Africa and Australia, a road trip through his musical heritage.
It’s a joyful, illuminating tale of rootsy world music, enhanced by viewing it through Gil’s eyes.
It’s a shame his own music takes a backseat.
