Video: CoD: Black Ops brutal new Wager Mode could be the best and most frustrating thing ever

Treyarch reveals a new multiplayer mode. And boy, is it going to cause some fights

Words: on September 2, 2010

Still no official word on zombie mode yet (seriously guys, what the hell's going on?), but this new video from this week's CoD: Black Ops multiplayer event in L.A. reveals a a whole new online angle set to bring ecstatic joy and elegiac, murderous despair in equal measure.

Wager Mode allows players to bet in-game currency (COD Points, no doubt named after a high-level creative strategy meeting between a bunch of high-level creative execs, who rewarded themselves with yachts) on their final ranking, over four different match types of varying harshness. How harsh? Why, that particular knowledge is held within the fortified keep of a dark citadel, deep amongst the dread mountains of a faraway mystical kingdom. In order to attain it you must journey...

Oh alright, just click play on the video then. Jesus, I try to spice things up...

So what do you reckon? Best game types ever? Annoying frustrat-o-thons? Personally I reckon they could really freshen up the CoD online formula, but I do worry that Gun Game could suffer from the old CoD balance problems by way of the leading players pulling away with the best weapons while everyone else trails with pistols and knives.

But I don't know. I haven't played it. But by now, Nathan, Charlie and Tyler Wilde probably have, via the aforementioned event in L.A. So watch this space, and surely they will furnish you with their opinions soon.

    @fish94 It seems less like coincidence, seeing as Reach which just decided to use points, and one of its major competitor just happens to use points too, not a coincidence, though not really a bad thing

    @Hayseyboy
    And I suppose Halo invented FPS? -_-
    Well done, two games use similar concepts. Thats /never/ happened before! It's not like it could possibly be a coincidence.

    @Cmccormick94 well actually The Reach system just unlocks armor permutations and stuff using credits. So no it doesn't.

    As much as I hate CoD, I must say, this looks pretty good. Still, they'll have to balance out the MP, as well as removing any huge chances for using dirty tactics (e.g. camping).

    and I thought Treyarch would just rip off IW without adding anything new. I gotta say, these modes look incredibly fun. Also, having everyone using the same weapons for most of these means that when one person is using a cheap weapon, everyone's using it! I'm liking where this is going!

    Thats sounds so fucking awesome, but I have no interest in playing it. It's kind of just like cool to know that it exists. MW1 was great fun, but Ive lost my interest.

    The Gun Game mode is going to be awesome! My friends and I would do that way back in Rainbow Six 3. This is gonna be a blast.

    Hm, looks interesting. Although I gotta say, that whole randomly-switching-weapons mechanic in the 'Sharpshooter' mode? Ratchet & Clank's been doing that little bit for years now. :P

    @KingMiedus I love Halo a lot, but I have to agree with Cmccormick that the new non-competitive ranking system (not the Arena, that's actually brilliant) is jumping a bit on the CoD bandwagon in that you can rank up by just playing a lot, which appeals to the (larger) casual audience. The only difference is that you don't get better, just look cooler.

    About the video, I don't know if it originated there, but I do know the first and last place I've played Gun Game is on CSS. A popular variation on it there though is reverse Gun Game where everyone starts off with the best weapon, and then they get progressively worse. I prefer that to regular GG, because people who go on lucky killstreaks at the beginning can't just cruise to victory on better weapons. And skilled players come out on top, but it's closer and more intense.
