Reason #2: Alternate History 101 is cooler than real history
Set in a pseudo World War II, the story focuses on an alternate Sweden being invaded by the armies of the sort-of Axis nations. The setting adds a healthy dash of sci-fi to it all, easily differentiating it from the legions of WWII games out there. The main characters include a plucky young lady who’s head of the town watch and a general's son returning home from college. Both are forced to fight so they can defend their neutral country from aggressors.
Definitely worth noting is how the story is told. The “Chronicles” part of the title isn't meaningless; each part of the game is viewed in a history book chronicling the war. A new page is turned after a battle is completed, and each cutscene is a different panel on the page. This fresh storytelling device may help not only with interestingly presenting the somewhat linear story, but it also enables the player to replay any battle.
FUN FACT #2
Valkyria Chronicles isn't related to Tales of Vesperia or Valkyrie Profile, so please stop confusing them already.
