A minute or two into my match in Mortal Kombat X, I--playing as Cassie Cage--punch Kano in the testicles so hard that his junk explodes into tiny, fleshy chunks (*shudder*). That this move isn't even one of MKX's utterly brutal Fatalities is a pretty good indicator of just how insanely, gratuitously gory the game is. But it's not until after I check out all the X-ray attacks and Fatalities of the currently announced roster that I notice certain objects in the background of each stage have a slight glimmer to them whenever I'm nearby. Hmm.
Curious, I edge my way to the far side of the forest stage I'm fighting in and see a log sitting on the ground. Again, it glimmers when I get near--and with the press of a button, my character picks it up and hurls it at my opponent, smashing him in the face and breaking his jaw. WELL THEN. I become obsessed. What else can I interact with? I must know. A tree branch glimmers. I press the magic button, and Cassie leaps up, grabs it, and swings around. (My opponent, who is much better than me, later uses this trick to drop kick me in the head, instantly snapping my spinal column in half. No big deal.)
All stages have some level of interactivity, a mechanic NetherRealm played around with a lot in Injustice: Gods Among Us. Some, like that log, are great for dishing out damage. Others, like those tree branches, can be used to launch an unexpected attack, or to escape a pursuer. As my demo comes to a close, I have one final showdown in a stage called Outworld Market. I keep my eye out for glimmering objects I can interact with, but can find nothing. That is, until I'm getting the crap kicked out of me on one end of the stage. There stands an innocent old lady, just minding her own business--I probably wouldn't even notice her if not for the fact that she glimmers for a brief second. No… I think to myself. Couldn't be. I press the button. Cassie reaches over, cradles that tender, smiling lady in her hands, and then hurls her with god-like strength at my enemy. A split-second later, my geriatric projectile makes contact with my target and explodes. Gibs rain from the sky, and I finish my fight wearing the blood of someone's grandma. Mortal Kombat X, everybody.
