Halo who?

Oct 5, 2007

Look, we liked Halo 3. No wait, that's understatement. We lovedHalo 3 and gave it a ten out of ten. But that doesn't mean Master Chief's latest adventure has everything we want in a first-person shooter. In fact, whether you're talking about single player, multiplayer, premise, or plot, we think there are a ton of games that have - and will - best Halo 3. No, we're not joking. Here are ten games that should make you forget about Master Chief.

The Orange Box
Packed with more hits than Mike Tyson's got punch, The Orange Box may offer the best bang for your buck this holiday season. It comes with not one, but three games that all have an upper hand on Bungie's so called "masterpiece."

Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Let's face it, Master Chief has about as much personality as a potato with an assault rifle, and Halo 3's banal cast does little to make you remember - let alone care - about what happens to anyone in the game. Whether it's the stereotypical jive talking black guy or the equally forgettable troops that accompany you in battle, none of the characters stand out to us in Halo 3.

But if there's one thing the Half-Life series has always done well, it's the way their NPCs have personality and character. Unlike Halo, Half-Life has always succeeded in making you feel like you're playing an active role in a real world, populated by people you actually care about. You want to know more about Alyx Vance, and there's a sense of urgency when she's in trouble at the end of Episode 1 that you just won't get from the fuzzy flashes of Cortana in Halo 3 - that feel more like an annoyance than anything else.

Honestly, Halo 3's cast is as stale as a block of Styrofoam and we're more interested in finding out what'll happen to Gordon Freeman and Alyx in Half Life 2: Episode 2. Clickhere for a preview of what you'll see in the series' latest extension.
