Legendary Pokemon guide

Ah, roaming legendaries. Diamond and Pearl had two roamers, Mesprit and Cresselia, so we're lucky that Black and White only have one each. Thundurus is exclusive to Pokemon White, and you can go after him once you have all eight gym badges.

Pokemon White only – Roaming Unova. As you pass through the gate between Opelucid City and Route 10 after receiving your final badge, the woman manning the info desk stops you to tell you about a storm brewing on Route 7 - that's your cue that Thundurus is available for capture.

Fly back to Mistralton City and head north onto Route 7. Whoa! That lady wasn't kidding when she said it was storming. The effects are really cool here – take a moment to soak it up. When you're ready, head to the house east of Dragonspiral Tower (the healing house) and the old woman will come out to talk to you as you approach. She'll invite you in and tell you about the legendary, and when you leave the house, it will appear and then fly away.

The easiest way to encounter Thundurus is to find a spot where you can go back and forth between the border of one route and the next area, and continue going back and forth until you enter the route and it's storming. The spot between Route 6 and Chargestone Cave is a good one, for example.

Before you start though, make sure the Pokemon leading your party either knows the move Mean Look (Watchog and Cofagrigus both learn this via level up) or has the ability Shadow Tag, otherwise chances are your target will flee before you can catch it. Roaming Pokemon are always a good candidate for using your Master Ball, too.

Trivia: Thundurus does not learn any Flying-type moves via level up even though it's part Flying type.

Roaming legendaries are always a bit of a bother to catch, but as the only pure Flying-type Pokemon in existence, Tornadus is worth the effort. Diamond and Pearl had two roamers, Mesprit and Cresselia, so we're lucky that Black and White only have one each. Tornadus is exclusive to Pokemon Black, and you can go after him once you have all eight gym badges.

Uxie is part of the Psychic legendary trio that debuted in Pokemon Diamond / Pearl. Each one guards one of Sinnoh’s three lakes.

Pokemon Diamond / Pearl / Platinum – Once you’ve beaten Team Galactic at Mt. Coronet, the lake trio of legendaries (Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie) will become available. Find Uxie at Lake Acuity.

Pokemon Black / White 2 – After completing the game, visit the Cave of Being and watch as the three Legendary fairy Pokemon fly to different locations around Unova. Uxie can be found in front of Nacrene City Museum.

Trivia: Uxie is the mascot of PokePedia, which is a French language online Pokemon encyclopedia.

Every generation of Pokemon games has a legendary trio, from the legendary birds of Red and Blue, Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres, to the more recent psychic lake guardians Azelf, Mesprit and uxie from Diamond and Pearl. Black and White introduces a dual Fighting-type trio, dubbed the musketeer trio, and Grass/Fighting-type Virizion is one-third of that trio.

Pokemon Black / White – Virizion waits for you within Pinwheel forest once you've encountered Cobalion in Mistralton Cave.

Pokemon Black / White 2 – Virizion can be found in Route 11. If you return after defeating the Elite Four, it will be at a higher level.

Trivia: Virizion's typing is strong against the two other members of its trio.

One of the three legendary birds from Generation I, Zapdos is the Electric/Flying type third of the trio.

Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver – Zapdos appears outside the Power Plant on Route 10 in Kanto once you've earned all 16 Gym Leader badges. Zapdos is around level 50 during this encounter.

Pokemon Platinum – Once you get the National Dex, the three legendary birds (Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos) will be roaming Sinnoh in the same way that Cresselia and Mesprit jumped around from place to place. Use your Marking Map Poketch app to see their current locations and track them down. Once the encounter begins, use a Pokemon with the Mean Look move to prevent each bird from fleeing (or better yet, use a Wobbuffet – its Shadow Tag ability will automatically prevent the bird from fleeing, even if you switch it out) and you should have all three in no time.

Pokemon FireRed / LeafGreen – Zapdos can be found at the Power Plant. To get there, fly to Cerulean City and head to the Pokemon Center near Rock Tunnel. Go north and use Surf when you get the river. Follow the river until you get to the Power Plant. Make your way through the building and you’ll find Zapdos inside.

Pokemon XD – Zapdos can be caught during the boss battle against Grand Master Greevil on Citadark Island. This is a pretty tough boss battle and it’s fairly difficult to catch the legendary birds this way. Since the bird trio is now available on Platinum and HG / SS there’s really no reason to go back to XD, unless, of course, you really want to.

Trivia: Zapdos is the ONLY dual-type Electric/Flying Pokemon.

Between cover-stars Reshiram and Zekrom, it seems like Zekrom has a slight edge in popularity, perhaps due to his strikingly intimidating appearance compared to the cuter Reshiram. Like Reshiram, Zekrom's type combo is unique. With incredible stats befitting a legendary, you can't really go wrong with  this Dragon/Electric powerhouse

Pokemon White only – If you're playing Pokemon White, you must capture Zekrom as part of the story in N's Castle after you defeat the Elite 4.

Pokemon Black / White 2 – Specific to Black 2, you will receive a Dark Stone from N in his castle after defeating the Pokemon League. Take this stone to the top of Dragonspiral Tower to capture it.

Trivia: Zekrom is the heaviest Pokemon in the Unova 'dex..

Did the original Pokemon designer die and get replaced by a colourblind four year old around the time of Pokemon #250?

    Nope.
