Legendary Pokemon guide

Landorus isn't a version exclusive Pokemon itself, but to encounter it requires that you have both Tornadus and Thundurus in your party when you visit the Abundant Shrine off Route 14.

Pokemon Black / White – Visit the Abundant Shrine with both Tornadus and Thundurus in your party. Tornadus is exclusive to Black and Thundurus is exclusive to White, so if you're having trouble acquiring both of them, you could ask to borrow one from a friend just long enough to capture Landorus, in exchange for the same courtesy in return.

Trivia: Although it's part Flying type, Landorus can only learn one Flying-type move, Fly, via HM. It does not learn any Flying moves via level up.

This dual-type Dragon/Psychic Pokemon is the lady half of the Latias/Latios duo.

Pokemon SoulSilver – Capturing Latias requires the Enigma Stone, a WiFi event item from an as of yet unannounced Nintendo promotion. Head to the Pewter City Museum with the stone and give it to the person there. You will receive the Soul Dew, at which point Latias will appear, sitting in Pewter City waiting for your challenge. She is level 40 during this encounter. HeartGold players will need to trade for a Latias.

Pokemon Sapphire – After beating the Elite 4, Latias will appear roaming around Hoenn. The same tactics that work for Mesprit, Cresselia, and the legendary bird trio in Platinum will work here. Make sure you have either a Wobbuffet or a Pokemon that knows Mean Look at the head of your party to prevent Latias from fleeing once you encounter her. It’s highly recommended that you just use your Master Ball on her if you have one.

Pokemon Emerald – You have to choose between Latios and Latias in Emerald. After beating the Elite 4, when you end up back in your room in Littleroot Town, approach the TV and watch the program about flying dragons. Your mom will talk to you and ask about the Pokemon’s color. If you say Red, Latias will begin roaming around Hoenn.

Like in Ruby and Sapphire, it’s possible to obtain BOTH Latias and Latios, provided you obtain the Eon Ticket that allows passage to Southern Island. In Emerald, whichever Pokemon you didn’t pick previously will appear.

Pokemon Ruby – It’s possible to obtain Latias on your own in Ruby, but you need an e-Reader and the Eon Ticket e-Card to get to Southern Island, where you’ll find Latias. It’s also possible to obtain the Eon Ticket by mixing records with someone who obtained the ticket directly (i.e. if you obtained the Eon Ticket through mixing records, you can’t pass another ticket on to anyone else). The Eon Ticket was also given away as a Mystery Gift at a few Pokemon events, but your chance for that passed awhile ago.

Pokemon Black / White 2 – Latias is specific to White 2 and can be found in the Dreamyard. You will need to follow and battle it until you near Soul Dew.

Trivia: Latias and Latios were the first legendary Pokemon to have a gender, with Latias always female and Latios always male.

This dual-type Dragon/Psychic Pokemon is the gentleman half of the Latias/Latios duo.

Pokemon HeartGold – Capturing Latios requires the Enigma Stone, a WiFi event item from an as of yet unannounced Nintendo promotion. Head to the Pewter City Museum with the stone and give it to the person there. You will receive the Soul Dew, at which point Latios will appear, sitting in Pewter City waiting for your challenge. He is level 40 during this encounter. SoulSilver players will need to trade for a Latios.

Pokemon Ruby –After beating the Elite 4, Latios will appear roaming around Hoenn. The same tactics that work for Mesprit, Cresselia, and the legendary bird trio in Platinum will work here. Make sure you have either a Wobbuffet or a Pokemon that knows Mean Look at the head of your party to prevent Latios from fleeing once you encounter her.

If you say Blue, Latios will begin roaming around Hoenn.

Like in Ruby and Sapphire, it’s possible to obtain BOTH Latias and Latios, provided you obtain the Eon Ticket that allows passage to Southern Island. In Emerald, whichever Pokemon you didn’t pick previously will appear.

Pokemon Sapphire – It’s possible to obtain Latios on your own in Sapphire, but you need an e-Reader and the Eon Ticket e-Card to get to Southern Island, where you’ll find Latios.

Pokemon Black / White 2 – Latios is specific to Black 2 and can be found in the Dreamyard. You will need to follow and battle it until you near Soul Dew.

Trivia: Latios is the only legendary that is always male.

Known as the Diving Pokemon, Lugia is the cover star of Pokemon Silver.

Pokemon HeartGold / SoulSilver – Lugia is kind of hard to miss in SoulSilver, as you'll be encountering it via the game's main story. After defeating the Kimono girls and Team Rocket, you'll get the Silver Feather. Take this item to the bottom of the Whirl Islands and you'll battle a level 45 Lugia.

Lugia is also obtainable in HeartGold though you'll have to get the Silver Feather from a man in Pewter City. The Lugia you encounter in this case will be level 70.

Pokemon XD – Lugia can be caught during the boss battle against Grand Master Greevil on Citadark Island. This is a difficult battle, and there are several other legendaries you might want to also catch within the same fight. We recommend picking one or two you really want to catch and just focusing on those.

Pokemon FireRed / LeafGreen / Pokemon Emerald – By event only. You would have needed a Mysticticket to get to Navel Rock, where Lugia resides. If you didn’t initially get this at one of the official events, you’re out of luck.

Trivia: According to Bulbapedia, in the final episode of ER, a patient mentions Lugia by name.

The prince of the sea!

Pokemon Ranger – This is the only way to obtain Manaphy on your own through normal gameplay. First, beat the game. Then, from the main menu, select the Ranger Net option and hold down the right shoulder button, the X button, and left on the directional pad to bring up a password option. Enter the code P8M2-9D6F-43H7 for North America and Australia or Mg35-Cpb8-4FW8 for Europe to unlock the Manaphy Egg special mission. Complete the mission (it’s easy) to receive the Manaphy egg. To transfer it to Diamond or Pearl, you’ll need two DS systems. Turn on both DS systems, one with Ranger and one with Diamond / Pearl, start the games and follow the prompts to transfer the egg.

Trivia: Besides Phione, Manaphy is the only breedable legendary. Unfortunately, its offspring is always a Phione, and it’s impossible to obtain a Manaphy through breeding.

Meloetta is an event-only Pokemon and has not been made available in the US yet. Expect an update once Meloetta's event is announced.

Did the original Pokemon designer die and get replaced by a colourblind four year old around the time of Pokemon #250?

    Nope.
