After Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan turned director with Taare Zameen Par (2007), it’s the turn of his compatriot Ajay Devgan to follow suit. While Khan’s film focused on child dyslexia, Devgan chooses a love story between protagonists Ajay and Pia (played by Devgan and his actress wife Kajol) that moves seamlessly from a romance on board a cruise ship to marital bliss in Mumbai, which is rudely shattered when Pia is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Though there are undeniable similarities with The Notebook (2004), Devgan the director has crafted a strong, emotional yet humorous tale that explores the nuances of romance. Ace cinematographer Aseem Bajaj’s virtuoso framing, lensing and eye-popping colour palettes stand the debutant director in good stead. As expected, the charismatic actor and the effervescent Kajol sing, dance and emote effortlessly.
