sex Top 7

Let's talk about a nice moment in gaming, not so much in regards to sex, but intimacy. In The Darkness, you visit your girlfriend's apartment early in the game, talk a little, share a moment, sit on the couch, cuddle, relax more, share a kiss, and nearly fall asleep watching TV. This moment has no predetermined end, you can sit as long as you want. You feel warm and at peace, and it's a rare moment in any medium, to be brought so wholly into a moment with a character. If intimacy in games was done more like that, I don't think there'd be anything to complain about. It's a lovely moment that sets up a major plot-point for the game and precedes the game's biggest emotional trauma. You really feel that moment, an I think it's something game developers should have a lot of respect for.

Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy even had the controller rumble at the scene's clima-... ending. I'm still crying outside.

Yeah you are right and that photo from the creepy slide was really creepy.

I'd argue that the sex scene in Heavy Rain, while fulfilling points 7-3, isn't really a "win" condition. It just happens to be a path in the story. Besides which, seeing a sex scene as "winning" is largely a matter of perspective. In which case, you're totally busted Mr Cooper! Anyway this article reminded me of a running joke in one of the seasons of 30 Rock where Tracy Jordan uses his money to make a video game porno after realising a way to get past the Uncanny Valley. It made millions.

The sex scene in Heavy Rain was so awkward it made me cringe.

Especially with the weird teeth and "twiddle RS to unhook bra" controls.

Possibly the truest thing I've ever read.

    This was very insightful.

Yes, sex in games seem weird and may seem weird to a certain group for as long as games exist. However, I think it will and is a slowly growing trend. More main stream games add some kinda of nudity or sex. The indie market seems to be growing. Plus it's probably only an American taboo. has tons of stuff with some type of sex. However, sex in movies seem weird to me still. I came here for blood! I want action!

Doesn't matter had sex... Sort of...
  • zymn - July 29, 2013 4:25 p.m.

Well, sex scenes in games don't have to feature realistic humans as to avoid the uncanny valley. Instead just sylized characters (Come on, hentai is pretty popular) and wtf is up with you saying that sex as a reward is disgusting? You go on and on about how the USA is so disgusted about sexual things being out in the public but in this article it seems you agree with them. GETTING LAID AS A REWARD IS THE BEST FRIGGIN REWARD YOU CAN GET MAN... Also why doesn't anybody ever talk about RDR's very brief sex scene? There was tits bouncing and everything.

imagine the crazy shit people can do with the future technology the weirdest most messed up and previously impossible fetishes would be realized. sounds nuts to think it could be freaking aliens being simulated in these. sounds like something in a dystopian novel, think we'll be seeing extreme creativity and new audiences

As someone who plays Visual Novels, a type of game that is 99.9% plot and characters with .1% gameplay, I would say that the best way to make in-game sex less weird is to make it something that happens naturally. While this probably won't apply to games outside of this genre, many Visual Novels do focus on the interactions between two characters as they fall in love. (And yes, I realize that almost all of these characters are high schoolers in Japan.) However, the sex almost never feels weird in these games because you have gotten to know the characters to an extent were it seems only natural they want to get down and dirty. Of course, since these are games that are almost nothing but plot, it is not something that can be put so simply with games with other focuses. So a question to Cooper= Persona 4 had a great amount character development and interaction. If there was the option to have sex with a character you got especially close to, and lets assume that it is not overly graphic or nasty, would you do it? I did establish a close connection to the characters of Persona, and if I could have slept with them I probably would have. Or does the idea of those characters you got attached too sleeping together become a turn-off?

don't you sleep with some of the characters in persona 3, im pretty sure its strongly implied at least
  • GR HollanderCooper - July 29, 2013 8:48 p.m.

I'm speaking to actually interacting with it, not it being there. The characters sleeping together is fine so long as I'm not expected to hit buttons to hump.

I think this was a well written Top 7, and agree with a lot of the points. What it all comes down to for me is feeling like a peeping Tom. That goes for movies as well. Maybe it's because I'm one of those prudish Americans but I'd really rather be playing the game or getting on with the storyline than watching sex scenes that were choreographed in some way or another. If I want to see some uncomfortable situations with bad acting, a vague storyline and no character development, well, it's out there. I don't need it in video games.

Hey if the closest I'll ever get to hooking up with a girl that is even half as hot as Miranda, is by playing a video game, then I'm down with it!
  • Sjoeki - July 29, 2013 12:21 p.m.

This is the internet right? If you think the implied sexscenes (lets be honest, most of the games fade to black when "the action" is about to begin) are weird, there probably is a very big part of the internet you never heard of... ... and I envy you. But in all honesty, when it is in cutscenes I don't really mind it. I thought it was nice to see that that my Shepard and Tali took it to the next level. In games like Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) where they are interactive it does tend to awkward though.
  • GoldenEagle1476 - July 29, 2013 12:20 p.m.

I don't know. When sex is presented to move along/enhance the story of a game (Mass Effect, for example) and it's done so in a cutscene, I don't think it's much different than a movie. And when you say you're more peeping Tom than particpant, couldn't that also be said for any movie that has sex in it?
