Tokyo Game Show - all the hottest news so far

Tokyo Game Show is in full swing and sprinkling juicy drops of gaming news around the world. We've collected the tastiest ones in a bucket and poured them out all over this very internet page for your consumption. Just don't let anyone see you licking the screen.

Dead Rising: Case West

Capcom has announced a new, 360-exclusive Dead Rising 2 spin-off to complement Case Zero, which is currently enjoying huge success on Xbox Live. The new 'Case West' will be an epilogue to the events of Dead Rising 2 and sees the return of the original game's protagonist, Frank West. He's covered wars, you know.

Expect the cost to be as wallet-friendly as Case Zero's 500MS Points when it hits the online service in the not-too-distant future.

Also of note is the news that Capcom has bought the co-creator of Dead Rising 2, Blue Castle Games. So... Dead Rising 3 for 2013, anyone?

Asura's Wrath

Also from Capcom comes a brand new IP - Asura's Wrath. Developed by CyberConnect2 of .hack fame, the 'game' will be a serialised drama built using Unreal Engine 3. The game's director said: "What we're bringing to this game is a brand new style that will have you questioning whether or not you're even playing a game ... sometimes even we're confused if what we're making is a game." So not arty farty at all then.

Above: Asura's Wrath. We're not sure if that's Asura, but he looks pretty angry at being impaled 14 times

The... whatever-it-is is headed to PS3 and Xbox 360. More screenshots can be found on CVG here.

DmC: Devil May Cry

As we had suspected for a while, Capcom showed us its new Devil May Cry game - DmC. The game has been extensively Westernised (which makes TGS a rather ironic place to announce it), going as far as turning lead man Dante from emo-goth into street punk. We weren't too attached to him... I mean, it's not like he's Cole MacGrath or anything. Take a look at the new Dante, who looks a bit beat up to be honest:

Ninja Theory is in charge of development duties, who are best known for PS3-exclusive Heavenly Sword. These days they're multiplatform and also making Enslaved, so we look forward to seeing how they've tackled DMC. Apart from making the 'M' an 'm'. Check out the first trailer here:

On the next page... The Last Guardian, Valkyria Chronicles 3 and more new announcements...

Asura's Wrath looks incredible. I love OTT batshit crazy games. & a guy getting impaled multiple times (& just shouting it off), then having to fight a galaxy sized budha thats trying to fingerfuck the earth over is as OOT & batshit crazy as it gets.
  • rezapoc - September 16, 2010 11:16 a.m.

Valkyria is on PSP rather than PS3 because games on handhelds such as the PSP and DS sell better in Japan which is where the most copies of the extensively Japanese series are sold. Dragon Quest IX is another good example of this bizzare trend and it sold in mega numbers.
  • philipshaw - September 16, 2010 10:13 a.m.

I just saw the last guardian and Ico/SOTC HD trailers and almost cried
  • EroticInvisibleMan - September 16, 2010 6:51 a.m.

Dear Children, There is a reason VC3 is only on PSP. Because it's the most popular console in Japan, and even with rife piracy on the PSP, it will continue to sell games and systems because of the influence it has there. In short, why would a company that makes most of it's money from Japan do something really stupid just to appease a tiny majority of the western world?
  • SkyDragonc5 - September 16, 2010 4:53 a.m.

If the combat is the same or improved I am in. I just miss the old Dante. The classy wisecracking in your face Dante

Dante is dead to me.... If he in fact, CAN die.
  • Jamahl - September 15, 2010 10:54 p.m.

I like DmC Dante's look. It actually makes him look less effeminate, lol. And his style of clothes make me think more of a british rocker than an a american one. Certainly looks like an interesting character!
  • crimsonlink310 - September 15, 2010 10:38 p.m.

If Capcom expects me to buy the new DMC, they better turn Dante's hair silver/white again. That was always Dante's staple, to have a red coat, silver/white hair, his sword, and the 2 guns Everything except the hair is fine. This DMC can be a prequel to when Dante was younger then the Dante in DMC3.
  • ReSoul - September 15, 2010 10:35 p.m.

I like the westernisation of DMC and the character design looks really cool but I was offended by the fact that he smokes. Dante doesn't smoke and he is one of my bad ass idols and to see this new guy totally do that offends me. Great looking game and I will buy it but crap will I hate when he smokes
  • crumbdunky - September 15, 2010 10:32 p.m.

I'm ion the "dislike" cam,p over "new " Dante'#s design. It's just too Emo this time(original Dante was a little gothic but NEVER Emo)and terrifyingly close to ~T~wilight for my liking. I'd only seen screens til just now and admit, had the game not been meant to be DMC I'd be saying more nice things about it. The action looks slick and it's an interesting set up so far but, and it's a big one, even as a non DMC design the lead looks like he was designed via a group and as such just reflects what they think is "trendy" or street right now. "Twilight's big-let's get some of that in there and grab some demographic" type stuff going on in my mind anyway. AS a DMC game his design is worse as it reflects none of previous Dante's looks or character and needs to, even as a reboot of the series(which after Bayonetta was a way better DMC than DMC4 itself was, was desperately needed), feed into what we know as Dante in our memories rather than seem to rip EVERYTHING up and start again. DMC had so many fans because they LIKE Dante. One of the biggest moans about the last game was playing as whiny Nero! It's like they learned nothing from that lesson or the Bayonetta, Kamiya one either. Bayonetta was a better DMC than DMC4 was mainly because Platinum didn't ask Kamiya to do anything other than make the game he wanted to-and in his confidence he made a great, at least VERY good, one. They didn't ask for it to be westernised or give the project to a western dev through not understanding that Japanese games sell well in the west if they';re good however Eastern they might feel. And anyway, DMC has more than it's fair share of western touches anyway-cultural stuff(like the opening powered by pizza in DMC3 for example), many of the backgrounds and EU Goth architecture and symbolism of the whole series and the Japanese stuff was in the slick, yet slightly bonkers game play. Maybe I'mm wrong and this will fit in and keep all us DMC fans happy when we get our mitts non it but so far I'm dubious-and I'm someone who loves the look of enslaved AND really liked HS(under rated through being a bit too short FFS!)sio have no doubts on the NT front, they have a lot of talent, some of whom I've met personally and know to be good guys into the bargain. No, I just doubt that Capcom have given them the same freedom as Plat did for Kamiya and choosing a western dev speaks to me of their disasters with Grin, sadly. Lastly, and I may get a lot of stick for saying it but I think it's true so here it comes:Capcoms story led games have, this generation, been pretty weak, esp for a stellar company like they usually are. DMC3>4,RE4>RE5, LP1 was an average game with a great premise which they then wasted(story wise remember co-=op was average and still had those bloody awful controls they never bothered fixing after no one liking them ever)in LP2 and so on via the BCs and DVs of this world through thew odd, but unrelated to my story point SF4 games and MH efforts. Zack and Wiki was good and DR1 was good but very flawed. IU'm sure I'm forgetting some entries in both plus and minus camps but my point stands-Capcom are not on form. They seem divided over whether to stick or twist and risk losing what made t5hem and so many of their series special to begin with. I blame a lack of confidence that's seen the spark I think of with Japanese made games get diluted ands ruined by a desire to be too western. It's no coincidence that most of the best Japanese games I've played this gener4ation made no concessions to anything olutside the Jpapanese developers ideas or the series strengths. I'd still count MGS4 as the best thing I've played this gen, Bayonetta's an amazing game, NMH games are cool, VC 1 and 2-there are others but it;'s a shorter, in my mind at least, list than those wrecked by this mad desire to make their devs make games in a way totally alien to them. Mikami, Kamiya and Suda(and Kojima's wild about western culture which comes through in his games anyway)show it's better to go with both what you know and do it with a single vision from the get go. A Lot of SE's critics point to this weak wish to get either western dev houses in or to push western ideals on their own directors this gen as part of their malaise. I pray, as I love the series and we're due an odd numbered(therefore great) numbered one, that I'm worrying over nothing, NT convince us about the dodgy makeover and everything's fine with DmC. Sadly, I've deeper worries over both Capcom and the Japanese industry in general as long as this bizarre, to many watchers, obsession with the way the west make their games continues. Hell, maybe Capcom just found NT's pitch the best and I'm over thinking all this by about twenty million miles but after some of the madness this generation who'd blame me for my position? rant done-sticky, coke filled keyboard says sorry for the many typos/spellings. Proof reading every letter's too much for me! Sorry for the long rant, too,!

The global economic depression takes it's toll on the video game industry- Dante has no money to dye his hair white in time for the new game!!!!!!!! I have an indirect experience with the DMC franchise. I do not own a console but my closest frined has and we played the games together and we damn liked them! The new Dante's look is weak at least. It seems to me like an attempt of campcom to hit a larger target group of emo teenagers that waste their lifes with Twilight or something. It's a serious developement and as I am aware a reboot of the series. The fact that for about a mili-second in the trailer (o:41) Dante's hair become white again shows us that this is the story of how he learns about his demon origins. Should be an interesting plot as long as we get the white hair back. We have to. This hurts... it physically hurts!!!!! You see the mythos of DMC has a part of it in the character's appearance. Dante's hair was a symbol of him being a badass half-demon who liked to kick ass. That's how the average geek came to know, love and accept him. Now we got a heroin addict emo kid with what it seems to be a serious mental illness. Still, it's a younger Dante so he may evolve (i hope) to the good old grampa-hairy bastard he truly is. P.S Dante smokes under the full moon. Seriously Capcom? Date likes pizza not weed.

DMC redesign looks horrid. The gameplay might not be bad though, but they just ruined Dante epicly.
  • Cyberninja - September 15, 2010 9:44 p.m.

something tells me the dante redesign is infamous 2 repeated
  • grizzly311 - September 15, 2010 9:33 p.m.

I want to play TLG so bad it hurts
  • ultimatepunchrod - September 15, 2010 9:19 p.m.

DmC looks pretty promising. like the music. maybe this is what the series "needed" in terms of reaching out to a new audience, and as part of the old audience, i think its keeping the fundamentals of the series intact. Not crazy about the redesign but its not the worst they could have done. all-in-all im pretty excited. release date?
