Thor 3 scores an unexpected director

Out of all the Marvel standalone films, the Thor entries are arguably the weakest links. However, it looks as though the studio plans on shaking things up for the Norse god's third outing, Thor: Ragnarok. The Wrap confirms that Taika Waititi has entered into negotiations to direct.

Waititi is perhaps best known for this year's vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows and for directing episodes of New Zealand's amusing TV export, Flight of The Conchords. He beat out Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer and Dodgeball's Rawson Marshall Thurrber for the gig, leading us to deduce that Marvel is aiming for another comedic slant in Thor's next outing.

Character-wise, all we know so far is Chris Hemsworth will return as the beefcake Avenger, alongside Tom Hiddleston as his troublesome brother, Loki. In terms of the story, the film's Ragnarok subtitle points toward a key event in the comics, which could lead to a catastrophic Winter Soldier-style shake up of the MCU.

Thor: Ragnarok opens on November 3, 2017.
