#24 PSOne was the first videogame console to sell 100 million units. On the last count it had shifted somewhere around 102 million.
#25 The World's premier text-based RPG - and, indeed, adventure game - emerged in 1976 under the suitable moniker, Adventure. It was also remarkable in that it was the first game that allowed players to interact with 'objects', allowing them to pick up, drop and use sundries within the game. Interestingly, in 1969 the game's coder - William Crowther - worked on the earliest blueprint of what would eventually become The Internet.
#26 The 1987 NES release of Final Fantasy II in Japan marked the first appearance of Chocobos.
#27 Depending on where you're from, you'll know Sega's 16-bit console as Mega Drive or Genesis. However, the first name that Sega actually considered calling its machine was the rather robotic sounding MK-1601.
#28 Movies and video games love screwing around together - a relationship that started as far back as 1973 when sci-fi thriller Soylent Green became the first flick to feature a cameo from an arcade game. Seen in the movie was a custom Computer Space cabinet.
#29 Thought Mass Effect's galaxy was big? That's nothing. Back in 1984 space trading masterpiece Elite gave players eight galaxies (each containing a staggering 256 planets) to explore and is widely regarded as the first ever 'open-ended' game.
#30 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is gushed over by gamers for being one of the - if not the - best games of all time. It was so good that it was the first game to receive a perfect 40/40 score from Japanese gaming mag Famitsu.
#31 For as long as there have been games, there have always been boffins striving to create better graphics. The first real leap in video game visuals came in 1974 when Kee Games used dedicated ROM chips for graphical data in its coin-op combat sim, Tank. Compared to other arcade games of the time, Tank looked superior in terms of graphical detail. By today's standards, of course, it looks positively retarded.
