The world's best counterfeit games

Super Mario Bros: Revenge Of Bowser

Okay, so the title is about as original as Peach getting kidnapped, but this Mario fan game is one of the best we've ever played. There's a sizeable community of people making their own SMB-themed games these days, but the ambition of the person who created this one (s/he goes simply by the name Hello online) really makes it stand out.

It takes the structure of Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy (central castle hub, stacks of levels inside, multiple tasks in each one to unlock the rest) and transposes it into a full-scale 2D Mario game using the Super Mario All-Stars graphics set. It's kind of a Mario's greatest hits compilation, combining the new games with the enemies and features of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. It even includes the veggie throwing from the western version of SMB 2, making it the fan game for the long-time Nintendo player. Accordingly though, it's also harder than a concrete bastard (Unless our 16-bit skills have floundered in this decadent 3D age), so be ready to mix your joy with a few screams when you first start. Get it here.

And speaking of Bowser...

So many, many future memories to be made...

Chrono Resurrection looked ok, but the animation looked pretty "meh." I know that they're just "fan developers" and i give them credit, they did a VERY good job, but 3D games/movies just look silly if they don't use motion capture technology for the animations. unless the animator(s) REALLY REALLY know what they're doing, have an extensive knowledge of anatomy, a Massive library of good reference material (Videos, images, live models, 3D posable models, etc) and amazing skill, (not to mention software) It's just going to look off. Sure, sometimes it comes out pretty good. they didn't always use motion capture to animate video games. But look back to some PSOne games and even some PS2 ones that didn't use it, and even though it may have looked ok at the time, compared to what's the standard now, it's like watching something from a Monty Python "Ministry of Silly Walks" sketch. you just cant capture the tiny "micro-movements," the natural look and feel, or the subtle nuances between what the animator thinks is happening when a person moves, as opposed to an actual recording of a live human being. Movement is such a complicated thing. Nobody moves in exact way as anyone else, and the amount of muscles, tendons, sinew involved in even the most minute movements are too complicated to leave up to a person to re-create them from scratch. 2D media can get away with this a lot easier, it generally has a less realistic style and characters move in comedic or exaggerated ways and the process has had much more time to progress and develop itself. but whenever I see a 3D model that wasn't "motion captured" it instantly starts to bother me. the movements are so stiff or too floaty, it just looks too unnatural and too obvious/distraction to ignore it. and I'm still trying to figure out what "ready4war" is talking about when he says: "the halo game looks cool but its fake" What, exactly, is "Fake" about it? Technically, all the games on this list are "fake," considering they are all examples of unlicensed use of someone's intellectual property/properties by a third party, without the approval of the owner(s) of copy-written materials being used. If your saying it's "fake" because the game isn't made by Bungie or made by a third party with the approval of Bungie, than yes, you correct. Considering this whole list is dedicated to counterfeit (AKA: Fake) games, saying "It's fake" is pretty redundant. we know it's fake. that's why it's on here. you could have given us the same amount of information had you said "That Halo game is a game." thanks, we're well aware. I don't see how you could have meant anything else; the game is real, it is a real game that exists, you can play it, just like you would any other "real" game. Maybe you're being really deep and just over my head. Although the game can be downloaded and played, it cannot be held in ones hand. It is not a tangible item, it cannot be created, nor can it be destroyed. it does not occupy any physical space, has not physical form, yet it somehow exists? how can this be? It is impossible for something that is not just a thought to exist without being made up of matter, having a volume. which means it cannot be real, and if it is not real, then it is OBVIOUSLY fake..... wow. you've really opened my eyes here, you are so wise. You've given me a whole new outlook on life and the world around me. for this, I thank you...

Im both disappointed and angry that Chrono Resurrection never make it. :( The evil wizards at squareenix just want to milk the classic franchise with more 'ports' and dull remakes.

    I want the Halo one!

Chrono Resurrection looks orgasmic (I just finished beating Chrono Trigger again,) I would have loved to play that. The rest of the games look really good too, I am about to start getting them all, with the exception of Sonic. I don't trust any sonic games anymore, fan made or not.

I would love to play all of these games, but my computer sucks. However, I must say, one fan game I liked that wasn't on this list was the Pokemon Fire Red Hack that changed the game to be the Generation 2 games. It's pretty redundant with HG/SS coming out soon, but it was still fun.

That Chrono Resurrection looked insane. They should have just changed some names of characters and places and told Square where to put their legal team. Especially after even the work it would have taken to make what they had, it kinda sucks that square didn't at least offer them jobs.

Man I loved Chrono Trigger and I totally agree with baggins although 259k isn't alot a million would have been more than fair
  • baggins - July 10, 2009 4:45 a.m.

Why the heck didn't Square wait for those guys to finish and then say, "Sell us the game for $250,000 and we'll forget that we could totally pwn you in court"? At least that way it would get released, Square would make money, the fans would rejoice and the developers could at least take solace in their hard work not being wasted.
  • r3ap3r - July 10, 2009 3:36 a.m.

wat would be pretty cool if they did a whole redone half life game with dlc packs and all.
  • onesweetdream11 - July 10, 2009 2:42 a.m.

square, so foolish in their age! they already knew that chrono trigger was good enough to resell without much content upgrade...but WTF! Tragedy is the right word.
  • RedOutlive10 - February 11, 2009 4:10 a.m.

Black Mesa mod for HL2 indeed looks jaw dropping, better than many games out there (even if it's simply remaking an older game with a new engine), really promising stuff. By the way there's another trailer for it that looks even better. And goddamn that Chrono Trigger 3D remake looked outstanding, too bad it got cancelled. C'est la vie.
