Wolverine sequel Logan reveals its villain and teases three more pics, but what does it all mean?

We've got an official title Wolverine 3 - my bad, it's Logan now - which means it's time to move on to more substantial teases. First, the villain: over on the movie's Instagram account, we see actor Boyd Holbrook looking Mad Max-ish in a picture with the caption "Pierce."

It would appear that Holbrook is playing recurring X-Men villain David Pierce, a cyborg who hates mutants - and Wolverine in particular. Like Wolverine, Pierce can recover from wounds that would kill regular humans, an asset he's used to his advantage many times over the years in his quest to rid the world of mutantkind. With Logan now older and his powers weakening, he could prove to be a formidable foe.

The Logan Instagram account also shared three other images, teasing some locations and moods that we'll likely see reflected in the final product. Let's take a look at each and break down what they could mean:

Wolverine and government facilities go together like peanut butter and jelly - if peanut butter and jelly totally hated each other. While Logan has had healing abilities and claws for nearly his whole life, it was a secret facility and the Weapon X program that gave him his adamantium skeleton and turned his brain to mush, destroying most of his memories and turning him into the haunted, violent man he's often portrayed as. But Logan escaped from Weapon X years ago, and the facility isn't located in the desert. Could this be some new group attempting to recreate new bio-weapons?

Motel

Like the facility image above, this seems to be a mood setting picture as much as it could be teasing a location. A neon-lit motel sign is an instant visual cue for seedy behavior, and the fact we're seeing it as a reflection through a puddle also makes the pic feel cold and unwelcoming. It seems like Logan will be taking a road trip. Or, here's my pet theory: this is where we'll see Laura Kinney, AKA X-23 - a female clone of Wolverine. The character has been rumored to appear in the film, and her first appearance in Marvel comics was as a prostitute. It's a bit cliche, but the "hooker in a roadside motel" trope could be rearing its head here.

Aftermath

Well, this is pretty straightforward. Somebody likely ran into Logan and ended up having a very bad day. While this doesn't give us nearly as many clues about setting as the other images (there are no identifying marks on the gun, hand, or clothing, and 90 percent of the image is just kicked-around dirt), it does reinforce the idea that this will be a darker, more violent turn for our favorite Canuck with claws. Logan is said to be aiming for an R rating, and if severed limbs are part of the preliminary marketing materials, you can bet on more as we approach its March 2017 debut.
