The Witcher

A heaping of fantasy slathered in political commentary and misogyny

Fantasy games come in many shapes and sizes, but most of them strictly follow the code of featuring the great, the good and the virtuous fending off the bad, the corrupted and the green-skinned. Sex is generally confined to a pretty elf wearing a chain mail bra, and political comment never strays much further than a Greenpeace quest in which raw magic has infected some wandering hedgehog creatures and not only rendered them mad, but also significantly upped their armour stats.

The Witcher, then, enters our midst as somewhat of a game of our times. The authorities in and around the plague-ridden city of Vizima perpetuate a culture of fear and suspicion - freedom fighters could just as easily be called terrorists and racial segregation is rife. Moral values aren't so much blurred as smudged about the place by a recently-licked thumb - even those who might openly oppose the oppressors are seeking some kind of capitol gain, the undead have a conscience, drug use is a major issue and individuals will use whatever means necessary to get their way - by betrayal, or by allowing you pump them for information. And by that we mean with sex.

Characters doing the nasty are often hidden behind layered and blurred sequences, and you don't get to see much drug abuse but with mention of rape, suicide and revenge, the world of The Witcher makes Azeroth look like Sesame Street.

Also @Miles_Endsly: I do say that I forgive you, even though I am not of such as the Gamesradar staff. The only game of those that you mentioned that I have played is Bioshock, and it is truly remarkable, I just ask that you please don't commit such an act again. (Although reading and TV aren't bad, personally I feel all should pick up a book ever now and then).

@ Miles_Endsly: I understand how you feel. It saddens me, and (to an extent) angers me that some of the best games are not truly known until after they have been lost from the store shelves, or even worse abandoned by the developers, though, thankfully, that hasn't happened to this game. But to see those amazing games that are worthy of the devotion of millions, to not see what their fate should truly hold, and to only be smacked down (intentionally or unintentionally) by a game that is in a state of insurmountable stature (though I am not pointing fingers). If only I could obtain said games and give them the devotion that they deserve (along with other unsung heroes of the abstract and unfairly brutal video-game world). But alas I am a poor man, so until more financially sound times, I say goodbye.

Just got this, excellent game. Completly makes you lose track of time though, I've had it for 2 days and I've sunk 19 hours into it. And I haven't even finished the second area.

Out of all the wonderful GR articles, from the FAPs to the lists and everything, this article is easily my favorite because of you Miles_Endsly. My hat is off to you

Forgive me Gamesradar for I have sinned, it has been 12 days and 22 hours since my last confession, in that time I have read two books and watched countless movies when I could have been replaying Okami and God of War. Also I didn't recommend Bioshock to a friends of mine when I could have, and I once called Metal Gear Solid 4 just O.K. I also started Dragon Age and didn't bother finishing it, as well as Dead Space 2. These sins weigh heavy on my mind and if you could absolve me that would be great.
    Thanks,

Day two of my super secret yet strangely public feeling Journal... I don't know how much longer I can go on. They've over run... everything. They just keep getting back up. We can't do anything to make them feel it... Falling back out of 3G range in a cave outside Los Angeles. I really hope I wasn't followed. This may be my last entry. And I want you to know... just you, you who are just like me... surviving. I want you to know that even though we haven't fought together, and even though I haven't lived with you, laughed with you, or kissed you; I love you. With everything that's left of what I am; I. Love. You.

At a 9 why is this game getting Zero attention. I've never even seen it at a Gamestop! I really hope this isn't yet another amazafantabonderful game that got swept under the rug like Okami. Still can't get my friend to play that one. ... I just realized I'm probably the only person that will look at this thread at practically ever... I could write anything. Poop. I could put my own diary up in this 5000 symbols at a time and the only people that would know it exists would be those that look for Awesome obscure games! Which would be ok cause we would already have something in common!
