The Top 7... Worst Parts of Best Games

The best parts: Captivating fairy-tale adventure; timeless gameplay; iconic heroes, heroines and villains; challenging dungeons and puzzles; an unforgettable aura of innocence and imagination.

The WORST part:          WATER

How, you ask, could a franchise as established and worshipped as The Legend of Zelda possibly have a flaw? And, even if the series did suffer from some irritating imperfection, how could that imperfection possibly be something as simple and harmless as... water?

We don't know, but look at the evidence:

  • The most controversial and polarizing of all Zelda games, Wind Waker, just happens to be the first Zelda game set entirely on or around water. Many fans hated the world's new look as much as they hated Link's new look.
  • Even folks who dug the changed art style couldn't stand the changed mode of transportation. Sailing across the water in Wind Waker is a tiresome pain. Too much blue...

  • Want to get out of the boat and do some swimming? Link "drowns" within a minute. In other games, he's hurt instantly. The kid can defeat Ganon a thousand times over, but he can't swim?
  • The most hated level of any Zelda game - perhaps of any game ever - is Ocarina of Time's Water Temple. We've had nightmares about that place...

  • Yet the Water Temple is really pretty horrible no matter what Zelda you're playing. The phrase "water temple" has become geek slang, synonymous with "hellhole," "virtually impossible to solve," and "the equivalent of a complete rectal examination." Seriously, look it up in the dictionary.
  • The fishing minigames are always the most dull and pointless.

Case closed. Like a cat, toaster or Gremlin, you DO NOT want to put The Legend of Zelda franchise near water. Bad shit is bound to happen.

Dishonorable mention: Tingle. What an asshole.

I still have nightmares about the mission in Halo 3 called Cortana, I could not for the life of me figure out how to get to the end and after around 8 hours of seaching I finished the mission and resolved to NEVER play that mission again.

I hated the part where you had to get the licenses for planes in GTA San Andreas, I stopped playing the game at that point, months later a buddy of mine helped me get the licenses and I found out that you almost never had to fly a plane in the game, damn that sucked hard!!

I would like to submit the save point lacking Phazon Mines in the original Metroid Prime for this feature. The only point in the entire game where you can go over an hour against some of the toughest enemies with no opportunity to save.

i like Wind Waker and water temples in Zelda games. haven't played this terrible Majora's Mask one though.. i also very much like the Flood, but somehow Reach was better than Halo 3... maybe it's a coincidence that there's no Flood and it's awesome

I love the blue shell pics. The Muhammed Ali one was freakin hilarious.

I have a friend who is exceptionally good at avoiding blue shells (by which I mean he slows down and lets others take them for him and then retaking first, much like people have been suggesting). Of course, it's often been the bane of my existence (ofttimes thanks to the very same friend).

George Bush would proably dodge that stupid thing like he did with the shoe

I hate the flood sooooo much. I mean, I play Halo to fight aliens on alien planets, not to shoot a frickin' zombie.
  • spongejerk89 - November 15, 2010 3:03 a.m.

Wow, I always loved the Flood levels on Halo 1. They were in 2 of my 3 favourite levels from it: Assault on the Control Room, The Library, and The Silent Cartographer.
  • Aletheon - November 13, 2010 4:42 p.m.

My friend spent hours on the Gummi ship screen. He loved them. I guess not "everyone" hated it.
  • BobberyFan98 - November 12, 2010 11:01 p.m.

Amen for the one about Halo! THE FLOOD SHOULD JUST GO DIE IN A FIRE.

  • Trilby - September 11, 2010 11:26 p.m.

One game that punishes you for winning as much as Mario Kart? Definitely Madden. Technically it doesn't punish you, but its 'make every single game a close game' system hacks me off.
