The Top 7… things you didn't realise the PS2 did first

2. It was the first console to let you record TV

Friggin’ hell! That sounds brilliant. Why have I never heard of this amazing PS2 feature befor…

Oh, you mean the utterly dreadful PlayStation 2/digital recorder hybrid that was the ‘only released in Japan for a reason’ PSX? Yeah, we should probably just swiftly move past this entry, visionary as the tele box-recording abomination was.

On second thoughts, the PSX was the first Sony machine to incorporate the XMB. And everyone loves the XMB, yeah? Hello?

Above: Ah, screw you. Thumbs up businessman from Google Images likes a bit of Cross Media Bar action

1. <drum roll, please> PS2 was the first console to represent the universe, the Earth and life

You bet your sweet ass it was. Wait, what? Alright, we better backtrack on this one. By far the most visionary thing the PS2 was the first console to do, was the fact it symbolised the core components of existence. Woah, don’t navigate away just yet. We’ve only gone slightly mental. According to Shuji Hiramatsu, designer of the PS3, the key ideas behind the PS2 were "the universe, the Earth and life".

Shuji says: “The black slate colour, the PS2 logo, and the blue graduation in the stand conjured up images of limitless life, from where new content such as DVDs and games would emerge.” Haynes Video Game Manual backs this up by stating: “The black casing and distinctive green (power) and blue (eject) LED function lights are part of a design ethic meant to represent universe, Earth and life.” Shit, if a book says it, it’s got to be true.

So in summary…

The PS2 being black represents the universe.

The green light on the reset button represents the Earth.

And, apparently, the blue LED on the eject button represents the joyous miracle of life.

Bet you can’t say that about your precious Dreamcast, eh? What does that represent, apart from horrible financial failure? Damn, that was harsh. We’re sorry Shenmue, please forgive us. Wait come back. We didn’t mean it!

I completely forgot about the pre-order thing until you brought it up. I remember my dad having to fill it out and not having a clue what to do. I still got a PS2 day one

Not to question Radar's authority on the subject, but I have to mention... 7. Every cart based console worked in any orientation. A kid in my freshman dorm attached his genesis to the side of tv stand, because the stereo took up all the room in the cabinet. It worked just fine. 5. Pressure sensitive buttons; I think that's right but they sucked, how about the click sticks? Those are actually useful and I beleive the dual shock 2 was the first controller to feature them. Although I don't recall them getting much support. 4. Redesigned the redesign; maybe this isn't enough redesigning but Genesis, Genesis without the headphone jack and volume control, Genesis 3. ?? If that's not enough can I get some credit for the cdx as well? Nomad = redesigned genesis?

looking at the cow pic, at first i was like "what the..." Then i was like "OH!...AW, COME ON!"
  • yagirlfriendsfavoriterapper - October 19, 2010 5:07 p.m.

Seeing as there are still Game of the year quality games coming out in 2010 for PS2 ( Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow) I would say PS2 is not retro at all but a forgotten current gen (kinda) system as well.
  • AlpineGuy - October 19, 2010 5:01 p.m.

The images really sold this article. Also, cow birth WTF?
  • MattMk2 - October 19, 2010 3:43 p.m.

Damn It, I really miss my PS2. Stupid Idiot I am traded it at EB Games for Fucking F.E.A.R on 360. I fucking hated FEAR, and every day I miss my good old PS2. Sure I've got its sexy big sister, but Ill never forget those good old days.
  • kor2disturbed - October 19, 2010 12:36 p.m.

Wait if the PS2 is the universe does that mean it's God as well? Cause that be badass as hell.
  • g4m3rk1dd - October 19, 2010 11:53 a.m.

i hate you for that last picture...
  • jmcgrotty - October 19, 2010 7:55 a.m.

I am pretty pissed right now. Doesn't anyone remember that at the time of it's release, the blue LED was a big deal (At least the reprint of the PSM article referenced it)?? I know it was discussed in point #1, but it needed a whole category of it's own. And, you really can't bring up the horizontal/vertical situation without mentioning the spinning playstation logo on the front. So that even when you did change the orientation, the logo faced the right direction. And while I am too lazy to go back and see who said it, I wouldn't consider the ColecoVision to be "backwards compatible" with the Atari 2600. I actually had it, and since they were different companies, I would consider it to be horizontally compatible. Or, considering the superiority of the ColecoVision, maybe diagonally compatible.

The PS2 slim was such a piece of shit. So much overheating. Mine lasted about a month. I love the PS2 though, my 10 year old original still works to this day!
  • NightCrawler_358 - October 19, 2010 3:57 a.m.

*SMACK* i TOLD YOU! we never talk about the PSX!! it never happened!
  • secretsearcher - October 19, 2010 3:21 a.m.

Three things: 1) that last picture? TMI 2) block the fucking advertisers, please 3) the rest of the article was great. I love the PS2 :)
