The Top 7… Classic Xbox Live games we'll miss

1. Halo 2 (duh)

(2004)

What’s being discontinued: Playing as a Spartan or Elite in up to 10 different matchmaking game types across over 20 different maps.

What we’ll miss: If you have to ask, Halo 2 was the most popular original Xbox Live game, and still is. With over 8 million copies sold worldwide, there was always easily a match to join. Even if you picked up your controller now, you’d still be able to find a good number of people playing, unlike most other original Xbox Live games that have no activity whatsoever. Halo 2 was extremely accessible. People could learn the game really quickly, but it still wouldn’t be so easy that it got boring.

We’re definitely going to miss how creative people got with the custom game types. Some were so good that Bungie added them to Halo 3 (Infection, for example). And while we still got Halo 3 to hold us over until Reach, contrary to what others may think, Halo 2 was just a different game and had such a vast, close-knit community at nearly an MMO-like capacity. People ended up meeting others who would then become close friends either through regular matchmaking or joining clans. Some even end up getting married.

Even though many Halos have been released since 2, those weren’t at the same caliber either. Halo Wars was a short-lived RTS while ODST’s multiplayer was mainly recycled from Halo 3. At least while we still have Halo 3, we can always reminisce on Zanzibar – er, Last Resort.

Thanks for all the work involved in making this list. Great job on the podcast review this article for us. I started playing on Xbox Live with Halo 2 and that's pretty much all I played on XBL until the Xbox 360 got some descent games. Thanks for the memories.

Do not fear..you can still tunnel a lan connection to these games and play with your friends online. Sure you will need to use voice chat via your pc but you can still play these games online provided they support sys link..and most of them do!

Someone needs to start a petition for saving Halo 2 online. I'd definately add my name to the list.

there was a second conker game that was supposed to come out but microsoft cancelled it... wait for it, what do you say for that, let me fill it in, This sucks! microsoft is not using rare correctly, other than porting the original bad fur day to the xbox, and creating that awful nuts and bolts, they have done nothing. i assume microsoft is trying to run them out of business because the majority of xbox and 360 owners don't play most rare games for their system. they'd be better off not on microsoft's chains and making them for nintendo because that's where rare can obtain a hell of a lot of their money as the market they usually target owns a wii.

This is probably the main thing I hate about the online era of video games. It kind of sucks knowing that there's an expiration date on a major component of your games.

Why the hell isn't PGR2 on this list, its was a bee's diaphragm away to being a perfect online racer. You are a bunch of Philistines!

*Sniff*, I'm gonna miss Battlefront 2, it deserves a remake for 360 where you can do instant action thorough live, and 32 AI per team. That would be truly epic.
  • D0CCON - April 13, 2010 10:56 p.m.

And the worse part is, SW Battlefront 3 is going through development hell (that may be an understatement). I hope it gets released someday, but things are NOT looking good.

Oh the glory days of shouting, "FREAKING NOOB!" over the headset during my younger years while playing Halo 2. Actually it was more like a few years ago, but nonetheless, I will miss playing Halo 2. I'll be on for one last farewell. Recaptcha: shingled replacing I'll replace your shingles!
