The Top 7… 2008 games we can't stop playing

1 - Call of Duty: World at War

Release date: November 11, 2008 (eight months ago)

Why we’re all still playing it: The single-player campaign is home to countless “oh shit!” set pieces that bombard you with teeth-rattling explosions, but as with Modern Warfare, it’s a ride that ends in a matter of hours, not months. Even though the four-player co-op levels and same-as-CoD4 deathmatch options are predictably captivating and add value to the package, we’re going to attribute W@W's staying power to the fresh-from-the-grave Nazi Zombies.

Could there be a more perfect enemy to slaughter endlessly? We think not. Aside from the general glee of crushing wave after wave of goosestepping undead, this gloomy take on Horde mode has you boarding up windows to keep the clawing, biting, rotting corpses from entering your bunker. Fun enough on its own, but subsequent additions (the most recent of which was June 11) have added more weapons and new locations to the never-ending struggle against Hitler’s brain-munching minions.

This staggering amount of replayability has made W@W 2008’s most played game according to tracking site Raptr, with more than 245,000 hours logged from its community alone. Right behind it? Modern Warfare, which was released way back in 2007.

If the past two Call of Duty games are still in the top three most played games, Is there any doubt what’ll be the most played game of 2009?

  • zIndianaJonesz - August 9, 2009 4:40 p.m.

I like that when i sold these games they started making dlc people have ideas after the game is out i think that the developers are retards for not putting it in the game its all about the money silly obama....

do they say we as in the communtity or we as in the development teams and people who run this website on playing these seven games?
  • RandomIdoit - August 3, 2009 7:18 p.m.

with ya all the way moonfrost. never really got to use online though. (my internet doesn't work on consoles.) But I feel that someone could just do the internet right people like you and me would be able to enjoy a game to it's fullest (IDEA FOR ARTICLE: top ways to improve the internet for consoles) any ideas on how to improve the internet?
  • TheWebSwinger - August 1, 2009 9:26 p.m.

K now I can see why GR gets accused of 360 bias. On an unrelated note. I could never get into L4D as much as everyone else has. Dunno why, it just bores me.
  • Hany_Jam - July 31, 2009 9:43 p.m.

How come Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is not mentioned in this thread ?? I think it was one of the most anticipated and long awaited game of 2008 and I'm sure it came like a blast when it was released in June of 2008.. PS3 owners definitely still play MGS4 I guess.
  • GMAN2 - July 31, 2009 6:08 p.m.

I just cant get enough of Nazi Zombies
  • Samueltehg33k - July 30, 2009 12:35 a.m.

  • Dill - July 29, 2009 11:46 p.m.

You know what? I really like this Top 7. Grats Brett
  • Dill - July 29, 2009 11:44 p.m.

In fact... you know what, you shouldn't have done this at all with only 7 entries allowed! Actually, wait, nevermind. That would just be telling us the good games from 2008. Scratch above
  • Dill - July 29, 2009 11:42 p.m.

I've listened to Talk Radar. A lot. So I know what I'm saying when I say, "You forgot World of Warcraft." Seriously, it's been out for over five years. I know it may be cliche to add it to a list like... oh wait, haha, this is from 2008. Scratch the above
  • Turkeykilla7 - July 29, 2009 10:43 p.m.

I agree with Rockband 2 and thats about it. Theres only so many Nazi zombies you can kill before you feel like turning the gun on yourself.
  • harloskate - July 29, 2009 8:48 p.m.

Fallout should be #2 next to Halo 3 at #1. With all the map packs they should eaasily be in the top 5. Skate 2 should also be in the top
  • RatPuncher - July 29, 2009 8:07 p.m.

    I'd still be playing Fallout 3 if my 360 hadn't red-ringed. :(
  • Shane1403 - July 29, 2009 7:35 p.m.

GOD DAMN IT!!!!! I'm only findin out about loads of dlc now cus my 360 has the rod :'(
  • afroninjakatana - July 29, 2009 3:36 p.m.

I really play the hell out of Fallout 3 and L4D. The planning is useless on L4D because either way your zombie food. Fallout3 is the best because you can always can start a new life.
  • CoD_22 - July 28, 2009 11:37 p.m.

why was lbp not mentioned? the replayability thanks to the community aspect is phenomenal! and burnout paradise? ive played that every day since i got it. about a month ago. i see.
  • Thelonius - July 28, 2009 9 p.m.

this article pretty much sumed up what i've been playing pretty much all year. Especially RB2. I cant believe that games music library. 1 thing i would say is missing, hands down, Street Fighter IV.
