The Lorax tops the US box office

The Lorax has climbed to the top of the US box office after taking $70.7 million on its first weekend, the biggest opening of any film so far in 2012.

The Dr Seuss adaptation comfortably trounced the rest of the competition, with nearest competitor Project X making some $50 million less in second place. That in turn was still enough to keep the junior Hangover in second, with Act Of Valor languishing in third on $13.7 million.

Safe House
added another $7.2 million in fourth place, while Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds took fifth spot with a $7 million weekend. Family romp Journey 2 came in just below those two on $6.9 million.

Hit romance The Vow dropped off a bit this week, but still added $6.1 million to its overall haul. This Means War continued to disappoint however, with $5.6 million not enough to take it past the $50 million mark.

The table is propped up by Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance and The Artist on $4.7 million and $3.9 million respectively. And if you ever see those two films mentioned in the same sentence again, we’ll eat our collective hat.

Next week sees John Carter enter the box office fray. Do Disney have the first big blockbuster of the year on their hands? We’ll have to wait and see…
