The hidden references in World of Warcraft

Donkey Kong
The Gorillas of Un’Goro crater, as well as King Mukla will occasionally drop Empty Barrels.

Final Fantasy VII
Located in Dalaran is one Aerith Primrose, a level 30 flower seller, who bears a passing resemblance to the famous flower seller, Aerith Gainsborough.

The Legend of Zelda
You can find a gnome named ‘Linken’ in Un’Goro Crater, who gives out a Zelda-themed quest and the loot to match (Linken’s Sword of Mastery!).

Super Mario Bros.
It seems Un’Goro Crater is Blizzard’s home for Nintendo references, like Muigin and Larion. Find these two in Marshal’s Refuge.

Also, visit Blast Thunderbomb at the Ymirheim camp in Northrend to help pilot his Mario-like Jumpbot to the top of the mountain.

Seen all those unmanned Goblin Shredders about? Well, just look at the control panel and you’ll see a portrait of the Queen of Blades, Sarah Kerrigan.

The Lost Vikings
You can find this nod to Blizzard’s 1992 platformer in the three lost Dwarves in Uldaman: Olaf, Eric the Swift, and Baelog.

You can find a bucket of guts named Ramstein the Gorger living amongst the burning wreckage of Stratholme, named after the German industrial band.

Siouxsie and the Banshees
Oddly, there are a few Siouxsie references in WoW, including this one: a Night Elf Death Knight named Siouxsie the Banshee in The Ebon Hold.

Ernest Hemingway
A strange trio of literary figures reside in Nesingway’s Expedition in Stranglethorn Vail: Hemet Nesingwary (Ernest Hemingway), Sir S.J. Erlgadin (J.D. Salinger) and Ajeck Rouack (Jack Kerouac).

Romeo and Juliet
One of the more bizarre boss fights in WoW takes place in the Opera House in Karazhan: Romulo and Julianne fight you while quoting the original play.

Miscellaneous Easter eggs

Paris Hilton
Haris Pilton is found in the World’s End Tavern of the lower part of Shattrath City with her dog Tinkerbell. If you have The Eye of Divinity equipped, you’ll be able to see a ghostly ‘Ricole Nichie’ standing next to her.

The Loch Ness Monster
Nessy is a boss-level threshadon occasionally seen by travelers on the Deeprun Tram between Ironforge and Stormwind City.

Even WoW isn’t safe from this insidious Internet meme. You’ll find an Auctioneer O’reely in Booty Bay, an Auctioneer Yarly in the Undercity and O’Reily the owl near Tanaris Port.

Not Sure if it's been commented on yet but somewhere you can find a tomb with the name 'Nova' on it and a cloaked human or blood elf with it which is a reference to StarCraft:Ghost

@nadrewod999 What is your problem? If you don't play WoW, don't read an article about it? In fact it isn't even so much about WoW, its an easter egg article. It saddens me that idiot fan boy's like yourself are allowed a membership on this website
  • AuthorityFigure - October 30, 2009 8:44 a.m.

A reference becomes satire/parody when a game chooses to source this much material. Stupid WoW...
  • Auron - October 26, 2009 1:57 p.m.

They forgot to put 'Oprah Windfury' in.
  • KidKobun - October 23, 2009 11:56 p.m.

Kyle: [trying to convice Cartman to give it up] Dude! Boars are only worth two experience points a piece. Do you know how many we would have to kill to get up 30 levels? Eric Cartman: [pulls out a piece of paper] Yes. 65,340,285, which should take us 7 weeks, 5 days, 13 hours and 20 minutes, giving ourselves 3 hours a night to sleep. What do you say, guys? You can jus... you can just hang outside in the sun all day tossing a ball around. Or you can sit at your computer and do something that matters...

@JohnnyMaverik BioShock didn't invent the diving suit ;) Plus that NPC in World of Warcraft has been around long before BioShock was released.

you forgot bambi...xD ah well, good article tho!

@ EDfromRED the minimum requirements for WOW are very low, as you can see by the simplicity/ugliness of the graphics compared to other contemporary PC or console games. Since the annual subscription will cost you $155.88, you may want to consider the costs in addition to the costs of upgrading your pc from whatever its current specs are.

Looking at the in game pic on "Ace Ventura" me thinks some1s been ripping on Bioshock...

  • TheWebSwinger - October 23, 2009 4:29 a.m.

Grabbiest article bi-line ever. I don't even play WoW, but I clicked on this article.
  • SandroTheMaster - October 23, 2009 2:30 a.m.

The "Ultrasonic Screwdriver" deserved a mention, not to mention the Mechagnomes are a stand-in to (among many others) the Cybermen. "You'll be be upgraded... I mean, decursed!"
  • Fancy Rat - October 23, 2009 12:47 a.m.

@nadrewod999 God forbid a game review site should write an article about a video game.
  • BlackElement17 - October 23, 2009 12:47 a.m.

  • oufour - October 23, 2009 12:22 a.m.

  • Hurricrane - October 23, 2009 12:03 a.m.
