The games that shaped a generation: Xbox

12. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Ubisoft Montreal | Ubisoft | 2004

Brilliant revival of the classic retro series. It blends temporal tampering and fluid acrobatics with sword-based combat, platform adventuring and satisfying puzzles

What made it so great?
A truly classic adventure that teeters tantalizingly close to perfection. While the ability to "rewind time" is the game's party piece, it's the Prince that steals the show with his repertoire of athletically approved moves.

Warm, hazy lighting lends an ethereal glow that pours over the brilliantly designed levels and navigating the Persian hero perfectly from an elaborately plotted A to B is a heavenly satisfying thrill.

And it's a love story! An actually well written, heart warming love story! In a game! A videogame!

Get ready to play
Hide your raging machismo behind the sofa - Sands of Time is more thoughtful and beautiful than you might normally be partial to, but don't be a numpty and let that stop you experiencing one of the best games of the last generation.

Been there, done that?
If you like Sands of Time (not everyone does), you'll like the cinematically-driven adventure Indigo Prophecy (not everyone does). It's got some timeline jumping and a little bit of love, but most of all it's quite unlike anything else that's out there.
