The games that shaped a generation: Xbox

13. Forza Motorsport
Microsoft | Microsoft | 2005

If you value 100% realism, accuracy and physics over arcade speed, this is the must-own racer on Xbox

What made it so great?
Please, whatever you do, don't call Forza Motorsport a Gran Turismo clone. When the developers at Microsoft saw what the folks at Sony had accomplished with their realism-obsessed racing simulator, they didn't copy it... they thought, "We can do that better."

Luckily for Xbox owners, they were right. On its very first try, Forza matches the GT series car for car, track for track and customization option for customization option. Then it makes two immeasurably huge improvements - accurate damage physics and online play. The former was long overdue in a genre that prides itself on realism. The latter gathered lonely, closeted car enthusiasts around the world and united them into an elite and knowledgeable culture club.

If you're a newcomer to this type of hardcore racing, Forza Motorsport may get you hooked. If you're already in love with the automobile world, it's guaranteed to take over your life.

Get ready to play
Own a fancy ride in the real world? Purchase its digital counterpart here, trick it out like yours and take it for a test drive. You'll be staggered by how dead-on familiar the handling feels. Don't be surprised, however, if your car is capable of taking the turns at Nurburgring and Laguna Seca, but your skills aren't. Aren't you glad you found that out in a game and not in real life?

Been there, done that?
We cover most of the worthwhile car simulators on this list, so perhaps you should test and customize the engine of a new vehicle. For the same level of accuracy on two wheels instead of four, Moto GP2 and its extensive garage of motorcycles is your best bet.
