The games of August 2010

AUGUST 31

Metroid: Other M

Platform: Wii
EU release: September 3

Team Ninja, the developer responsible for the recent Ninja Gaiden games, takes on one of Nintendo’s most long-lived franchises by adding tons of cutscenes, frequent perspective shifts and in-your-face melee kills. Doesn’t sound like a Metroid game at all, does it? On the surface it sure does look like Other M will veer away from the norm, embedding Samus with a team of space police instead of turning her loose on a hazardous planet alone, but the devs insist the sense of isolation will still be present.

We’ve had some misgivings about this in the past, from the direction to the controls, but there’s still a chance this ends up becoming one of Wii’s strongest offerings in years, so we’re keeping our minds wide open. We’ll know the verdict later this month in our Super Review.

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero

Platform: XBLA
EU release: TBA

This is a really cool idea from Capcom. Instead of holding fans over until Dead Rising 2's release with a mere demo – some random chunk of mission from the beginning of the game – the publisher has decided to whet their zombie-slaying appetites with something much, much meatier. Case Zero is a DLC prologue set three years before the events of the sequel and featuring exclusive weapons and outfits that, along with your character's skill buildup, can then be ported over to the main game when it arrives on September 28 in the US and October 1 in Europe.

That's a whole month of extra play that will actually count towards the final experience… if you have an Xbox 360, anyway. This is a Microsoft exclusive.

Valkyria Chronicles II

Platform: PSP
EU release: September 3

We hate to say it, but we're a bit skeptical about the follow-up to 2008's Valkyria Chronicles, and not just because it's moving from PS3 to PSP. This time, battlefield tactics aren't the only focus – parts of Valkyria Chronicles II take place at a military academy, where the teenage recruits learn the ins and outs of war while also managing a full class load and a rigorous social schedule. We don't necessarily mind the high school vibe, especially if the developers are using Persona 4 as a template, but it seems like it might distract too much from the core SRPG gameplay we loved in the original. Hitler sums it up pretty well.

On the bright side, it looks like the beautiful hand-drawn art style remains intact, and the battle gameplay will also be largely unchanged (think third-person 3D Advance Wars). Plus, the class system from the first game has been expanded, with improvements to the original five classes as well as a brand-new armored soldier class. Sega, don't let us down!

Ace Combat: Joint Assault

Platform: PSP
EU release: September 3

For the first time, Ace Combat launches with a complete four-player co-op campaign, a much-needed shot in the arm for the always-excellent but definitely adrift franchise. This also marks the first time the series takes place in the real world, with recognizable landmarks instead of a fictitious planet that still looks more or less like Earth (San Francisco is even on the box – maybe you’ll be able to spot the GamesRadar office while doing a Mach 2 flyby?). Our only concern for this is the same we had with 2006’s Ace Combat X – that analog nub ain’t made for flyin’.

I have Other M reserved already. Hope the dev team isn't pulling our leg about the isolation part.

Lara Croft, not tomb raider? Must be something more.... sinister. And really, how much more interesting could a game about jets be....

Valkyria Chronicles 1 is one of way all-time favorite games, so VC2 is an instant buy for me. Other M is the only other game I care about this month.

I've had to resort to playing X-blades, which I got cheap, since I've already finished all the other games I have. I'm even playing Red Dead multiplayer, and I don't get into multiplayer in too many games. And there's not much coming until October! I tried to preorder Scott Pilgrim, but the Ubisoft site won't let me order in Hawaii, or Alaska, just the contiguous states and, oddly, the territories, which are islands! I still want the game though. Terrible summer.

    X-Blades?! My God, man...
  • Strangleme - August 2, 2010 9:53 p.m.

I have to be honest, August doesn't look very promising. However I am looking forward to Mafia 2 and Metroid: Other M. Thank god there are only 2 I want because I really can't afford a month of multiple awesome titles. I definitely go broke when that happens. I'm also happy to fire up my Wii after leaving it dormant for over a year!!! Lots of awesome Wii games coming aout soon!!!
  • Strangleme - August 2, 2010 9:54 p.m.

    Shit!! I meant out.
  • grizzly311 - August 2, 2010 9:55 p.m.

Looks like I am going to finally have time to do some catching up. I think the only ones I'll be picking up will be Monday Night Combat and Metroid.
  • sleepy92ismypsn - August 2, 2010 10:02 p.m.

Looks like some great games but I'll have to pass. I think the thing I'll be buying in August is that RDR dlc. I really wish they would spread out the great games because all the must buys for me come out this November.
  • CH3BURASHKA - August 2, 2010 10:07 p.m.

Metroid: Other M has been extremely polarizing. I used to hate it, but now I've been won over. I can't wait to play it see which me, past or present, was correct.
  • shyfonzie - August 2, 2010 10:12 p.m.

Man, I'm interested in Ivy the Kiwi?
  • Baron164 - August 2, 2010 10:38 p.m.

I'm interested in Scott Pilgrim and Shank but other then that I'm gonna be catching up on my back catalog of games. I think I'll finally pick up Uncharted 2 for my PS3 and give that a play through.
  • TonyBlue05 - August 2, 2010 10:42 p.m.

Oh goody, I get to spend the next 2 weeks listening to people having orgasms over the next Madden. Yay... ReCaptcha: "your terrified" Even the security systems don't know the proper "your."
