The 10 most anticipated games of E3 2011

3. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

The first Uncharted was a really good spin on the type of game Tomb Raider made famous, but Uncharted 2 is probably the best action movie gaming has ever seen. Overflowing with action-packed setpieces that put every competitor to shame, and honest to god quality acting and dialogue that made the characters seem real despite their extreme circumstances, Uncharted 2 was arguably the first undeniably must-own exclusive for the PS3. And players were left with one important question after they beat finished Uncharted 2, “How are they going to top this?”

Even with expectations so high, we think Naughty Dog is up to the challenge. We’ve seen precious little so far: a Chateau battle here, a Helen Mirren-esque villain there, and most recently a multiplayer demo. But we must know more. Where will Drake go? What will he be chasing after? How many goons will he shoot in the face? We are dying to have some concrete details on the single-player campaign for Uncharted 3, and Sony will undoubtedly reveal some new details during their June 6 press conference.

2. BioShock Infinite

BioShock might just be the most important game of the last five years, and since Ken Levine and his team at Irrational dropped such a huge title on us, we’ve been waiting quite a while to see what’s next. After a very fine sequel to the original BioShock (which Levine wasn’t involved in), it looks like Irrational is out to shake things up all over again. BioShock Infinite has dazzled just about everyone that’s seen it, with many already calling it E3’s game of the show. Just what’s so special?

Despite being a mature shooter based with an ideological battle happening in the background, perhaps the most interesting aspect of Infinite is all the ways it’s different from the first BioShock. Instead of a the dark recesses of the sea, the sun is always shining in Columbia, a city that flies above the clouds. The hero has much more of a personality this time, society is in the midst of crumbling instead of being dormant for years, and your companion Elizabeth has literally world-altering abilities. After seeing her briefly transport the protagonist from the early 1900s into what seems to be the mid-1980s, the possibilities of will happen in Infinite look to be, well, infinite. Unlike even the most anticipated sequels at E3, Infinite looks like something truly unique and unpredictable being done by game makers at the height of their abilities. How could we not be excited?

1. Wii 2/Project Cafe

Above: Well what would you use to represent such a known unknown?

Perhaps this is a cheat, but it’s our list so I don’t care. Out of everything included in this feature, what we’ve been waiting the longest for is the any new info on the next console from Nintendo. We’re not saying we hate the Wii, but we sure are sick of it, especially with what looks to be completely empty 2011 save for Zelda: Skyward Sword. So the promise of a new Nintendo console is too big, too important, too industry-changing to ignore. With the very real chance that Nintendo will stop favoring casual BS and leave waggle to wannabes like Kinect and Move, it’s enough to give a Nintendo fanboy-or-girl a heart attack.

Above: Have we seen our last lifestyle photo?

Of course we’re all dreaming big because we know so little about it. Maybe the controllers will have screens. Is it as graphically capable as a PS3/360, or will it be even more powerful? Will the games be on physical media? Are we setting ourselves up for huge disappointment, building up something in our minds that Nintendo can’t possibly match? Will any new games from all the big Ninty franchise make an appearance? Even if you don’t care all that much for Nintendo games, this is the first major hardware reveal in forever, and that alone easily makes Project Café/Wii 2 our most anticipated known entity of E3.

We miss anything essential? Let us know in the comments what games you're most looking forward to at E3.

And special thanks to Eric Bratcher for his contribution.

No battlefield or HL: 3? :/ Keep Catering to the casuals i see
  • Moondoggie1157 - May 31, 2011 6:10 p.m.

I've given up on my CoD hatred, now it's pure indifference. Honestly, I would love to see Nintendo return to it's SNES glory days (still doesn't beat Genesis), no more casual gaming crap. The casual gamer has had over 5 years of dominance, and really, no one is happy about that, especially Baby Jesus. Anywho, there is such little info surrounding E3 this year, I can only hope some big surprises are coming. :D
  • mahajinx - May 31, 2011 5:28 p.m.

I'm actually excited the most about Monolith Prod. announcing their new 'secret project' at E3 :)) (and thank God it's finally NOT a FEAR sequel!). Though I fear there's a HUGE chance of being disappointed, when/if they announce it's something OTHER than a new NOLF game :((. But - here's hoping! :) I wouldn't mind a new Condemned sequel, though :).
  • burkadirkdur - May 30, 2011 6:23 p.m.

please somebody give me something i NEED to know more about Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City or LFD3 I need a new Zombie Game hopefully RE:ROC
  • Alroos13 - May 30, 2011 4:48 a.m.

Great list. Mine would include Battlefield 3 and AC: Revelations, being my favorite game series going.
  • Bri77777 - May 30, 2011 4:25 a.m.

I spy with my little eye a Boondocks reference.
  • Engage183 - May 29, 2011 7:27 p.m.

I'm not going to make any decisions on what i think 2012 GOTY will be, since the games aren't even out. But I definitely think ME3 will give everything a run for their money. Project Cafe will be interesting...if they announce it with a new SSB i'm sold.
  • Jellyjiggler2 - May 29, 2011 7:14 p.m.

People need to get over the fact that MW3 will not only sell about 3-4 times more than BF3 but probably be better too. I'm glad the GR editors were able to see this...Say what you will about the yearly releases and such but if DICE/EA (who I believe makes the battlefield games) released a game every November, would they be as good as the last 4 or 5 CODs? I doubt it. Just my opinion. Also Bioshock Infinite= GOTY 2012. Unless GTAV is released or something, I don't think ANYTHHING can or will beat that game in sheer quality.
  • scorpianl17 - May 29, 2011 4:30 p.m.

    No love for Assassins creed????
  • PanaMusica - May 29, 2011 5:44 a.m.

Rumsfeld was a douche, but the risk management stuff “unknown unknowns” is just good project management…
  • NappyAfro - May 28, 2011 7:50 p.m.

Batman AC and Mass Effect 3, only ones I'm looking forward to.
  • vadorsoul - May 28, 2011 6:06 p.m.

After a while ive become pretty laid back when it comes to being angry at video games. I used to hate modern warfare and rockstar games with a passion. But now I can see why people would buy modern warfare. It is a pretty complete bundle with single and multiplayer with allot of replay value, and to be honest most people will buy this to play with their friends. So i dont get worked up over video games, dont get me wrong I still think that CoD is mediocre and rockstar is overrated, but I would rather spend my time loving games I love, like paper mario, chrono trigger, mass effect ect. Dammit, I'm rambling again.
  • vadorsoul - May 28, 2011 5:55 p.m.

    paper Mario 3d anyone?
  • meh - May 28, 2011 5:39 p.m.

also i could not give two shits about skyrim. its just boring to me and i don't care about. I acknowledge that its a good game from a good series, though. Just don't care.
  • meh - May 28, 2011 5:34 p.m.

Jesus, "I hate this game, it sucks and is stupid and if you like it you're an idiot." Thats all I hear from some of these people. If you're gonna bitch go somewhere else and do it. Great Article. Lots of good games on here that I'm looking forward to.
  • BigBoss213 - May 28, 2011 11:39 a.m.

    Great list.Bioshock looks epic.
  • UFAlien - May 28, 2011 5:05 a.m.

Every single game is a sequel or reboot. Not surprised.
  • lovinmyps3 - May 28, 2011 2:03 a.m.

I think Uncharted 3 or the new Assassin's Creed is at the top of my list.
  • ViolentLee - May 27, 2011 11:57 p.m.

If it was the top 9 most anticipated, and you got rid of MW3, it would be a perfect list.
  • NobodyLikesPaul - May 27, 2011 9:55 p.m.

PLUS Bioshock? rly? who the fuck wants bioshock over skyrim FUCK YOU
