False courage? What does that even mean? And exactly how much false courage do you need to take a gun to an elementary school and prey on defensless children? He was nothing but a coward. In order to quell the hatred he had for himself and his fucked up head, he had to kill off people of an innocent mind. Even if a videogame initially set him off to go and do what he did, what happened before that in his life is really to blame. There's always more to a story, but it seems as if some, like this man up here, can only focus on one detail of it.

This is utterly pointless. Retailers already have a policy against selling games to minors, so passing legislation punishing them for violating their own policies that they already enforce makes almost no sense. If there was some sort of epidemic where kids were buying mature rating titles under age then maybe this proposal would be somewhat justified. But it is almost exclusively being proposed on the assumption that video games have a negative impact on children and society, and that minors are going to the store and physically purchasing these dangerous materials by themselves without being asked for identification or having a parent present (which is required by retailers already). Interestingly enough it appears that commenters here agree with old, out of touch politicians that their hobby is damaging, causes violence, and thus should have laws and restrictions aimed at doing something that is already being done, in order to curb the threat of gaming. Also the Supreme Court has already ruled against this sort of thing and unless they go against their ruling as well as redefine what kind of media the government can restrict from the public, then the result will most likely be the same if they again hear a case of this sort.

In the UK PEGI and before that BBFC ratings on games are legally enforced. If a shop assisstant gets caught selling call of duty to a 10 year old they get a £1,000 on the spot fine and probably fired as well. It just makes sense , doesnt stop irresponsible parents buying little timmy call of duty for christmas but makes it a lot easier for parents to police what games their kids play. These laws have had absolutely no effect on the games that come out. they are almost never censored and Manhunt,GTA and Carmaggeddon were all made in Britain. Just another set of laws where america is behind the rest of the world and doesn't understand there usefulness.

A couple of years ago, I was buying some games when the kid in the queue next to me, maybe seven/eight asked for Dead Rising 2. Flabbergasted that he got it, I asked the cashier about it. He told me that because his dad was with him, legally they had nothing to stop them from selling it to him and that it was a broken system. So it all comes down to enforceability. It's depressing really: buying cigarettes and alcohol for someone under the age limit is an offence, and I see no problem with making the same rules apply to video games. Frankly though, this is all irrelevant in a few more years when all games will be bought from the internet since all high street shops will be in administration, DRM means there will be no more used games, and all games will be smartphone-only...

This doesn't exist for movies, as stated in the article. You can buy movies that are "not rated." or "unrated." anywhere in the country. plus, this completely restricts the sale of Adult Only games. Most of which are total shit, but hey, if I wanna buy one, I should be able to.

Well this oughta be interesting, seeing as past studies have found no correlation. But I guess when you're the US government, 10 million dollars is a drop in the bucket. Why not put that towards improving the mental health system in the country rather than waste time and money looking into games? Or at least give the ATF more power and agents

While I agree that there's an aspect of 'stress relief' in the escapism of video games, I don't know how much I'd agree with his statement. The kind-of people that are moral enough to stop- in game- and think "Hmm, is what [character]'s doing really right?" are the kind of people that are moral enough not to do that in real life; and the kind of people who ARE immoral enough to do stuff like that in real life are usually the kind of people who play CoD and kill their team-mates.

It's nice that Biden doesn't believe- or at least, doesn't actively promote- that there's a correlation between violent video games and violent crimes, but his statement still leaves a little to be desired. Obviously, things like making trailers less violent and putting more emphasis on the charitable work companies like The Humble Bundle team do, but there's only so much the gaming industry themselves can do to change the public's view on them, and the rest's up to the public themselves. Them and the media, that is. Because no matter how much the gaming industry does to promote itself with it's "Spec Ops: The Line"s and it's "Professor Layton"s and it's "Portal"s, there's still going to be stuff like the Mass Effect "sex scene scandal"- which I'm now going to take to calling MassEffectGate- and there's still going to be violent games in at least some sense of the term that the media can focus all it's efforts on.

Well I'm glad this didn't turn out to be the government looking for a scapegoat. Hopefully people outside the industry will start realizing how huge the games business is and stop pretending it's some kind of new trend.

Simple minded dolts on both sides of the aisle are quick to find a subtitle scapegoat instead of tackling the real, but much more difficult to conquer, catalyst(s). And on almost every occasion that scapegoat takes the form of a newly prevalent and largely misunderstood or mistrusted medium or idea. Jazz, rock 'n roll, hip-hop/rap, homosexuality, immigration, etc, etc. While responses such as this are difficult to swallow for those fond of the target of the moment, they are almost always ephemeral (unless religion is involved, of course).

Reading the headline, this sounded like it was going to make the games industry look really positive and willing to help, but the quotes, to me at least, make it look like the IGDA are being really smarmy and conniving. If it had just been a small point in a letter mostly about helping the US devise a solution, it'd have seemed fine, but this makes it seem almost like it's the other way around- a small offer of help in a larger letter denying responsibility. Less like the ant to help and more like they're shifting blame elsewhere.
