The only thing I was thinking about ACIII was that it will be smaller in terms of the size of the cities. I just didn't think that Revolutionary War America would be less intriguing to explore than Renaissance Italy. The story will probably be excellent with plenty of great historical fiction as usual.

I don't think it's reasonable to pay $10 to re-stock a digital version of a UMD game, that in and of itself is expensive. I just can't shake steam's sale success. The sooner Microsoft and Sony catch up in making things accessible to more people at cheaper rates the more money there will be to be made by each of them.

I completely agree with you. I see videogames as a storytelling outlet with much underused potential. Making the game react around the player's personal character flaws can lead to a deeper, far more emotional and personal narrative than you could have had from just watching a character overcome his OWN flaws in uninteractive cutscenes. I support this plan.

Yeah, Steam sales are fucking amazing. So are the Humble bundles which is where I picked up VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy and Shank and others for $6. I just wish that they would have sales instead of mostly fixed prices. How about a Winter or Spring of Sales to sell the Summer of Arcade games at a slight discount.

Gotta say Henry, I'm a little disappointed with this article. We gamers are tight enough as it is, we really don't need the people we respect in the press egging us on. I live in London, so can only go by sterling, but I feel 800 points (£7) is a cheap, or at least very reasonable price for a piece of non-essential entertainment. Cheaper than your average trip to the cinema, price of a gig, DVD or a few pints down the pub. 1200 points is hardly breaking the bank either. There are so many decent, medium-sized developers getting closed down at the moment and if we start complaining about spending 15 dollars on the things we love I don't know where we're heading. Also, almost all XBLA games have a demo. It's much easier to decide if the games worth spending the money on. You don't always get that with boxed games which are a far bigger investment and not necessarily of a higher quality.

Certain games are worth $15. Most aren't. I wait for a price cut. I only paid $8 for Bastion and Renegade Ops...partly because i upgraded my xbox - 20GBs (really 13GBs) doesn't get you too far when games are more that 150MBs. So I jumped at the Bastion price cut, as well as the Renegade Ops. I was not willing to pay $15 for Renegade Ops, especially when Steam was offering buy 2 get 1 free, which was basically $10 per copy, which I would have done if MS had a gifting system in place. I would have paid $30 to get it and give two copies away. Pity MS isn't that innovative.

While I do agree with adding more specific and balanced difficulty levels, there are those of us that view things like extreme difficulty as artificially padding the length of a game. For example, I just played through on Killzone 3 on hard, which took me around 10 hours, compared to normal which only took me 6 or 7. Also, I personally don't have the patience to play games through on the hardest difficulty setting, which has lead to me getting called a "bad gamer" before. I'm sorry, but how does playing through something on normal or hard make me a bad gamer, simply because I'm unwilling to suffer through hours of frustration, with the only reward often being a trophy/achievement. For me, games should have the right balance between entertainment and challenge, which not many games get right (Guitar Hero, weirdly, has perfect difficulty balancing, though I play on expert.) If a game makes you frustrated to the point where it's not worth continuing, I won't play it, or at least knock it down a difficulty level.

Funny you mention this- Super Smash Bros. Brawl had a pretty good system- Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, Very Hard. Developers might feel limited to the three difficulties, and therefore define them as " the easiest you could possibly go, the way it should be played, and this is going to make you scream your face off"- extremes. If developers want to fix difficulty, they should add more choices, more spaces inbetween the spots that are Brawl's Very Easy and Very Hard modes.

GOD OF WAR 2. I knew going into hard difficulty on that would be about up to my skill level (I'd beaten it on normal before), except for TWO hallway sections that, true to form, beat me bloody.

I'll be the first one to say it: A lot of parts of Darks Souls are irritating, repetitive, and bullshit. I bought the game, and enjoyed it, but there are a million ways they could have made it better. Better level design. Better enemy design. Better shortcuts. Better weapons and abilities. More lore. LESS BACKTRACKING is the main one. There are a lot of reasons it didn't win, and they were a lot more than technical issues. Technical issues is why Skyrim won't win.

"Cole Phelps, though, is one of the most interesting game protagonists to come along in a while." I can't even partially agree with this - Cole Phelps was a boring character. He fit a couple of typical stereotype characters - stressed war vet, checkered secrets in the past, fresh/naive new detective, everyman - (he can shoot, tell when you're lying, brawl with fists, and is unusually literate), the list goes on. LA Noire does a poor job of developing him as a character - we're told he has a family, but we only see them once, when he's being thrown out by his wife. He has no personal life outside of cheating on his wife and avoiding Jack. The only major changes are when he goes from one desk to another.

Frozen Synapse is awesome, and I highly recommend fans of strategy pick it up, but I just want to point out that Vandal Hearts II used a turn-based system where your actions were played out at the same time as the opponents', so the idea itself is not new.

This reminds me of what happened to my country (Greece) a few years ago. They wanted to eliminate the illegal gambling machines problem and to do so... they banned video games entirely! All arcade stores closed immediately (never to come back), most internet cafes (where games like counterstrike was played) faced police raids and busts. Even playing a game on your console or PC was illegal (but it was not illegal to BUY games, it was illegal to play them therefore videogame stores didn't close). I remember internet cafe owners and protestors demanding several public services and goverment buildings to be banned as well because they had PCs with windows and windows have those build in games inside them... Talk about the most stupid law ever existed. Thankfully it doesn't exist anymore (at least not in the shape it was). I really hate this way of thinking. If your finger hurts cut off your arm, right? Such a simple and easy way to solve your problem if you are a non thinking person (like most governors are).
