Halo 2 didn't keep everything that was great about CE. The single player is often thought of as the worse of the trilogy. The multiplayer was so broken when released they had a quick patch to fix it. It's as if that never happened, but trust me folks upon release grenades and melee were useless. It was awful, and clearly wasn't Halo. Only after the patch did things shape up.
I would say, it seems the industry has gotten a lot better since giving a movie "game of the show." One that wasn't released till after the next E3 no less.
