Superbad DVDs give Hawaii authorities a headache

They say no publicity is bad publicity, but surely Superbad doesn’t need any more press – it’s already been a big hit in cinemas and is poised for major success on DVD.

But it’s getting some dodgier exposure thanks to the cover of that very disc, which, in its two-disc unrated form features not only the faces of Jonah Hill’s Seth and Michael Cera’s Evan but also a juicy close-up of the fake ID that’s central to the plot.

So far, so harmless you might think, but authorities in Hawaii are concerned that the fake ID will the perfect target for dealers in phoney driver’s licences. In fact, so worried was Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannerman that he asked Wal-Mart stores to stop stocking the disc. The company agreed to remove the speciality covers from their Hawaii stores, but is undecided about the rest of America.

And here’s the kicker – the mayor went on to inform the Department Of Homeland Security. Now, we’re all for stopping people making fake IDs (unless it’s that Beer Inspector one we’ve got on order), but the Homeland Security gang? Really? Expect McLovin’ to be added to the no-fly name list any day now across the pond…
