Super Street Fighter IV review

10 new characters, four new modes and hundreds of hours lost in 2010's best fighting game

Words: on April 26, 2010

Little stuff that adds up

Remember the car-crushing bonus stage from the original Street Fighter II? And the barrels? Yeah, those were cool, right? Well, they’re back, and like a lot of things from the ‘90s they’re best left to a decade when we all had less discerning tastes. Now they feel like interruptions to the main arcade mode fights, and honestly aren’t that fun at all. Thankfully you can turn them off entirely – it’s just weird that Capcom’s touting the bonus stages in all the marketing, like they’re a big deal. They are not.

Above: “We should probably add bonus stages back in!” “I guess?”

Time Trials and Survivor modes are gone. It’s possible you had your fill of both in SFIV, but then again, there are 10 new characters and maybe some of us are interested in playing some offline battles other than arcade mode. They were already in the first game, why not toss ‘em in again?

And uh, that’s kind of it. There’s barely anything to complain about at all. The fact I have to dig deep and whine about modes and optional bonus stages shows just how solid Super SFIV really is. And to really sweeten the deal, there’s a brand new (and free) tournament mode coming in June that’ll further push the online experience into a community-driven fever.

Is it better than?

Street Fighter IV? Yes. There’s more everything at a lower price, so it goes without saying that this is the superior edition. However, Super SFIV isn’t the revolution that IV was – it’s just more of the same. That’s why it gets a slightly lower score. The online modes don’t mingle either, so you might as well buy Super SFIV.

Tekken 6? Pretty different experiences, but we think so. Were there lines for Tekken 6? Did the gaming universe go ape-shit over Tekken 6? The answer is “Um, no,” and that’s because Tekken 6 was more of the same in a far more boring way. Still a fine title, just not up to SFIV levels of reinvention or refinement.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger? We say yes, if only because SFIV and thus Super SFIV are easier for anyone to hop in and play. BlazBlue is arguably a prettier spectacle and home to an outstanding online experience, but it’s just not going to catch on like the World Warriors due to its incredibly dense, “you have to master this shit” experience. Seriously hardcore players may disagree with us on that one.

Just for you, Metacritic!

It’s last year’s top-rated game remixed with 10 new fighters and fantastic new online modes, all at a lower price. That’s an incredible deal no matter how you slice it, so if you were somehow on the fence about this whole Street Fighter thing, succumb and find out why everyone’s in love all over again.

I was pretty disappointed with Street Fighter IV for numerous reasons. For one, the online component was practically broken out of the box. It took them forever to fix it and when they did I had already left the scene. SF is cool and all, but I like certain other fighters much better. I definitely don't think it's as accessible as, say, Soul Calibur IV.

I'm gonna get this one, the only problem is online does not work for fighting games, one bit of lag and you've lost the game which is not indicative of anyones real skill. Maybe by super street fighter 4 EX plus Alpha turbo hyper fighting edition they'll get it working properly!!

I'm so excited to get this! Too bad I'm broke and need to sell some blood-plasma to get the money Thursday. The things I do for upgraded content.

@ lovinmyps3 Agree, it would have been interesting to see Poison show up, though I would have also liked to see Elena make an appearance personally, see how they would have handled her fighting style.

I never bought SF4, simply because I already had a feeling capcom would do a re-release in their typical fashion with the series, so I'll be glad to get a hold of this... Even if I am expecting them to announce Super Street Fighter 4 'Turbo' later this year.

@Abe504 so your not old enough to remember super street fighter 2 are you?
  • lovinmyps3 - April 26, 2010 10:51 p.m.

I kinda wish Poison was in it though. Despite her mystery gender (I force myself to accept that is actually a woman) she still kicks ass!

If you're a hardcore SFIV player you'll understand why this is a separate title and not DLC. The $40 start price is proof Capcom recognizes this issue. I have the game now and love it, now all they need to do is change the netcode to GGPO and it would be near perfect.

I somehow got SFIV for twenty bucks, so....I already pre-ordered this and it adds up to one full retail game. BOOYAH!
  • Abe504 - April 26, 2010 9:25 p.m.

this games shouldve been dlc. no way i would buy this game for even $40 bucks. They basically crapped on everybody who originally bought SF4

SF4 was really good etc, but buying this is just like buying a world cup soccer game: you are paying for basically the same stuff, a bit more polished and with a few new tricks. The huge rooster is cool but still 99% of the online players will pick Ken, Ryu, Akuma or Gouken and that is enougth reason for me not importing this game when there are so many interesting titles already to buy (God of War, Final Fantasy, 3dot game hero, Bad Company 2 just for some examples). Now if only SF4 owners could buy this half price as a DLC...
  • Amnesiac - April 26, 2010 7:17 p.m.

I skipped the original despite being very interested (too many games out at the time), so this is a great deal for me, especially coming out at the beginning of summer and right at the start of a relative dry spell in terms of new releases.
  • Embolado - April 26, 2010 6:29 p.m.

All fans of the series should run out and buy this game. If you have SF4 go trade it in for the next in the series. At 40 coins you cant help but support Capcoms business model: evolve the gameplay but keep most of the core mechanics the same and dont R-ape your consumers, I'm looking at you Madden.
  • tHEmISFIT - April 26, 2010 5:22 p.m.

I'm not going to buy this crap, I already wasted enough money on street fighter 4 and hated it. So no, its the same game again.
