StarCraft II - Blizzard releases first custom map

Burning Tide 3v3 map to feature lava surges and a resource race

Words: on September 8, 2010

Blizzard Entertainment has just announced the release of their first custom map for StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Titled ‘Burning Tide,’ the new 3v3 map features lava surges and a resource race, similar to the objectives in the campaign mission ‘The Devil’s Playground.’ Burning Tide finds players racing to collect as many resources as possible from the mineral lines spread throughout the map. But you’ll need to be quick and nimble, because of the lava surges, which will melt your ground forces unless you can move them to the higher ground.

Above: Some Protoss units prepare to make a weak push up the Terran ramp while the lava is at low tide. Note all the high yield gold minerals just waiting to be mined!

Above: Burning Tide at high tide. We have a sinking feeling that most players will pick Terran so they can mine more efficiently with their mobile command centers

We’re definitely looking forward to checking this map out. Finding the right balance between hoarding your resources and spending your money on offensive and defensive units sounds pretty hot. You can find Burning Tide in the custom games list.

Yeah, can't really see anybody else but terran really mining(hurr hurr) a good strategy in this map. Most likely everybody's teching to air forces to bypass the lava, which might open up some epic air battles.

hmm,, this can be real tricky,
it would be real fun having restrictions to air attack units too. no fast expanding base for zerg?
hahah this can be fun, and frustrating at the same time.

I was just thinking the same thing, then I thought about how fun/cruel force fields and fungal growth could be here.
