Star Trek sequel script underway

Despite the fact that the first film hasn’t even, er, opened yet, Paramount is already making plans for another Star Trek adventure.

It’s not really a surprise given that A) the franchise is possibly its biggest money-spinner and B) committing to have a script written doesn’t mean they’ll make the movie.

Still, it’s a sign of commitment to JJ Abrams and his team, three of which – Star Trek (trailer here ) writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and producer Damon Lindelof – are attached to write the second movie.

While Abrams has not committed to direct any sequel, he’ll obviously get first refusal on the job. And though the screenplay is still at the very early story stage, the aim is to have it delivered to Paramount for Christmas, with a summer 2011 release slot.

"There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet," Lindelof told Variety. "But we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

And there’s no word yet on exactly what we’ll see.

"Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month. With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

Given that Lindelof is the producer of Lost, expect Star Trek’s sequel to get twisty. Although given the first movie’s plot involves – spoiler alert – time twists, maybe that’s a moot point…
