The town of South Park is overtaken by a massive live-action roleplaying game in South Park: The Stick of Truth. You enter the town as the New Kid, but you’re no bystander in this war. No, the New Kid is the only one capable of bringing together all of the different factions, as he is a great and powerful master of magic.
And by magic, we mean farts.
The demo we saw was teeming with fart jokes and potty humor, as the New Kid used his “powers” to defeat the elves (led by the Jew King Kyle) in their base at the school. Besides unleashing powerful farts (called “Dragon Shouts,” because the New Kid is also the Dragonborn), he can also cup a fart and throw it, causing torches to explode and open up new areas. There was some actual magic in the game--an ability learned from the Underpants Gnomes lets him shrink and grow--but most of the game is spent with LARP analogs for actual spells. Lightning Bolt is splashing water on foes and zapping it with a car battery, and Butters’ healing spell consists of him walking over and patting you on the back, saying “Yeah, that’s it little buddy.”
Our favorite bit? The menu screen is the New Kid’s Facebook profile, complete with his stats, inventory, and number of friends. It’s a minor detail, but it proves Obsidian’s commitment to absolutely nailing the tone of the show. There’s still no release date, but we expect to hear more soon, so be sure to check back.
