Sonic Adventure, the only good 3D Sonic game, hits XBLA on September 15

Influential Sonic platformer will kick off slew of other Dreamcast titles to follow

Words: on August 31, 2010

Do you smell that? Ah, yes, it's the unmistakable aroma of a failed console desperately trying to be loved again on a successful console. The first downloadable Dreamcast game will be making its way to the Xbox 360 in just a couple weeks.

Sonic Adventure, known to many fans as the last Sonic game worth caring about, will be sliding onto Xbox Live Arcade on September 15 for the affordable price of $10.

Sega announced earlier this year it would be bringing Dreamcast games to the Xbox 360 and PS3. While only a handful of actual worthwhile titles in the Dreamcast's discarded history actually come to mind, it's still cool to see the "Virtual Console" atmosphere that was first kicked off by the Wii continue to fill up.

Although Sonic Adventure had its fair share of bugs, I'll debate anyone anytime, anywhere that Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed were pitiful by comparison. But then again, I just liked the fact that I could play as Eggman and repeatedly throw my little Chao pets into a wall of rocks.

Above: Unfortunately, even in high definition, you still have to wade through Big the Cat's boring fishing missions

No word yet on when Sonic Adventure will be coming to PS3, but hopefully there won't be a significant time gap. After all, PS3 owners still don't have a downloadable version of classic Sonic 2 even though it's been on the 360 and Wii for years now.

The only other Dreamcast title officially confirmed for a download release is Crazy Taxi, though Jet Set Radio appears to be in the bucket list too. But as far as we're concerned, Sega's job here will not be complete until the Japanese Dreamcast bus simulation game Tokyo Bus Guide has been ported to all of the current-gen consoles. But we'll take Sonic Adventure for now.

Sonic adventure 2 was fun and felt better but both dark and good sides had the same thing, someone fast, someone in a suit, and someone to look for emeralds.
the first game had amy, big, and gamma

i liked adventure 1 but i liked adventure 2 better since i really liked sonic and shadows lvls especially metal harbor and shadows space lvl that i cant remember the name of. the music was awesome and there were a few more things to do in it apart from the single player. never the less i will still pick this up, its a good game and at only 10 bucks its a steal. but i really want crazy taxi and jet set radio since i played those two games to death as a kid. oh my god jet set radios sound track is one of my favorite video game soundtracks.

I too, have more fondness for Adventure 2: Battle on the Gamecube than DX, it's version of Adventure. But that was only because it had more content apart from the main game to distract how horrible every second not spent with a hedgehog was. Still a good game though.

Secret Rings was good. Unleashed was good. They weren't 'great' but they were good. Honestly 3d sonic games aren't anywhere near as bad as people make them out to be. I agree with the dead horse comment.

And then they're gonna wait a few months to bring Dreamcast games to Virtual Console so that Wii users can play them, therefore games they might not have downloaded in the first place will seem like luxuries that are now available to everyone, so they'll jump right to downloading every title that they've ever so much as heard about. I would be guilty of that. Bravo, Sega, clever money whoring.

Sonic Adventure 2 was nothing more than awesome, I even like the Knuckles and Rouge missions - graphics and soundtrack were just purely outstanding at that time!

I thought Adventure 2 was the one with the Chao Garden, or did Adventure 1 have it too?

I actually thought Heroes was better than the first Sonic Adventure. It was really fun. Also Big and Amy's levels were fucking unbearable.

Too bad ill be mainly playing Halo: Reach. But ten dollars? That's amazing! If it was thirty or more i wouldnt have, i bought it at a high price for dreamcast and the gamecube. Hopefully theres some live compatibility, (i cant remember if there is multiplayer or not). Anyone know if its the DX Cut or any new aditions? I played this game a lot when i was a kid, but its hard to pick favorites on adventure 2 or one. I love running down the tower on that one level, it had great music too. A very memorable moment.
