Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS being co-developed by Namco Bandai

Tonight, during the Nintendo Direct livestream, president Satoru Iwata brought some Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS news. While we didn't get screens, a release window, or anything along those lines, we did find out that Nintendo wouldn't directly be handling the game, instead handing off some of the development duties to Namco Bandai.

Though series lead Masahiro Sakurai and Kid Icarus team Sora will he involved, some of the work will be pawned off on Namco's Keiki Kobayashi and Yoshito Higuchi, lead director on the Tales series.

What does this mean for the game? We have no idea, though it's not the first time Nintendo has handed off some of its biggest titles to third-party developers. In fact, the last Smash Bros. had several other studios involved, including Japanese developer Game Arts. You can also check out our list of gaming's biggest hand-offs, if you're wondering what has happened when Nintendo has sent Link and Samus off to other studios.

We'll keep you posted as more news develops.

    Namco... Soul Calibur!?

There's absolutely no reason for them to not put Klonoa in...I mean, other than the fact that he doesn't really have any fighting skills, but that hasn't stopped them before. Plus his last game was on the Wii, and before that he had two GBA games. Either that or Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia, seeing as (in the US) it was a GCN exclusive. Or they could do a Soulcalibur character even...Yoshimitsu would be a good fit, I think.

So at least one or two guest characters are sure to come from Namco if they are involved in the development, I guess. Pac-Man could be ideal, if they don't go down the SFxT route of putting him in a big wooden machine. My other vote would go for one of the "quirky" Tekken cast, maybe Roger or Gun Jack (projectiles, flying, wind up smash move....he's got it all). And a Tales lead character would be nice too, Lloyd or Yuri & Repede would be good to see.

My problem with the last game was that it was developed by no fewer than four studios. Nintendo is too insistant on keeping Sakurai around to direct. That man has become way too ambitious. Just give the game fully to HAL and have them develop it alone. I think that'd make for a much more cohesive product.

Explain? I don't see how that was an issue really.

I'd rather play as a big daddy.
  • ncurry2 - June 21, 2012 10:07 p.m.

And only be able to kill/be killed with a single move.

Maybe he fell so much in love with bioshock 2 that he can only play games as a big daddy without breaking in to tears due to emotional stress and is actually devastated that he can't play the next iteration of his favourite fighting franchise because of a lack of big daddy. Did you ever consider he was actually sad and not just trolling, look into his profile pics eyes and tell me you don't feel sorry for him. Also there's three entire moves, not one, not two, not four but three whole moves.

I guess I'll just have to bring my talents to PS3 then. But don't tell anyone, I'm gonna have an hour long show about me making the decision. But give it two years and it will all be worth it (sadly).

As much as I'm for PlayStation All-Stars, ncurry2 has a point. Unless they add in some form of Percentage or HP mode, it ain't lookin like it'll last too long.

Considering BOTH Hal and Project Sora are in, there's nothing to worry about, this excites me a bit actually, maybe Loyd will be in :P

Cool, when do we play as Dig Dug?
  • Sunfished - June 21, 2012 8:39 p.m.

Cool, now we're probably gonna get Namco's obscure characters in as well. But it's not like a bad thing...
