Sakurai begins work on two new Super Smash Bros. games

Masahiro Sakurai, who's just finished serving lead duties on Kid Icarus: Uprising, has announced he's moving onto preliminary research for his next project. Sakurai will be working with Nintendo on the future of the Smash Bros series, which he created in 1999 during his time with HAL Laboratory. Perhaps most exciting for Nintendo fans is the news that Sakurai's vision for the project goes beyond just one new title.

Above: We hope that at least something is already done

As Nintendo mentioned briefly at last year's E3, the Smash Bros series will be branching out onto both 3DS and Wii U, with Sakurai and his studio, Project Sora, overseeing both titles. The developer says he's been browsing Smash Bros Dojo (the site set up to provide info and updates on the series' previous installment, the Wii's Smash Bros Brawl) and finding his team's own handiwork a high bar to aim for: “What's the word... it's tremendous. How did we make this?”

Sakurai and Sora will be seeking developers to assist in bringing both new titles to their respective machines, by which time a whole generation's worth of Nintendo ought to be ready for commemorating in collectible virtual-token form. But which new entrants will prove themselves worthy of the series' highest honor – the opportunity to be smashed in the face with an umbrella by Kirby himself as playable characters? Your suggestions need posting, right now!

Karate Joe from "Karate Man" has been in ALL 3 Rhythm heavens, he has a chance atleast to be an assist Trophy. That guy from Pushmo and from Sakura Samurai should appear aswell, considering Ones a newcomer(along with Dillan) and Sakura Samurai is a Rebirth like Pit.

I don't understand the title of this article. "Work in on..."?

Put Crono, Frog or Lucca of Chrono Trigger. It may be a Square game ported to the PS3 and PSP, but it's undeniable that it's fame came from Nintendo's SNES.

I think the Sonic franchise could handle another representative. I think Tails flying could be interesting. Megaman (with X and Zero color schemes) would of course be welcome since he was the big choice who didn't make it into Brawl. Looking at assist trophies from Brawl for ideas makes me think that Waluigi might make an appearance, not that there's a huge clamor for it but because it would complete the set. I will admit I thought having his weapon be different sporting equipment was a nice touch. Maybe Little Mac would gain full-fledged status as well? Putting Pitt in Brawl almost certainly made his 3DS game possible. I bought the Legendary Starfy after learning about Starfy because of his assist trophy. Maybe they'd do that as a choice to possible lead to a wider western audience (although his body shape would limit his moves on the surface, he had plenty of power-ups that could be interesting. Other than that, I can't think of anyone else . . . a common criticism of Nintendo is the lack of new IPs. Maybe another ancient choice leading to a Renaissance?

They really need to get Geno from Super Mario RPG. Or at least freakin' Mallow. I know Square owns the characters, so they'd technically be 3rd party, but they borrowed Geno for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga just to have him explain a minigame to you, so surely they could borrow him one more time for a SSB game. Also, Sonic should be joined by Tails or Knuckles, but not both.

They need to make either Isaac or Felix into playable characters, not Assist Trophies like Isaac in Brawl.

I was always worried that the Wii U and 3DS games would coincide, but TWO game!? That's pretty awesome, as long as they put as much love into both games as they have the previous entries. For new characters, who aren't ridiculous, a new Donkey Kong villain or cousin, Prince Fluff from Kirby's Epic Yarn, maybe some of the bounty hunters from Metroid Prime Hunters, make the Star Fox characters not clones of each other, Little Mac from Punchout, Starfy maybe, Tom Nook from animal crossing, one of the guys from Rhythm Heaven, and as far as third party characters go, maybe Capcom would be glad to lend MegaMan to stop the whining fans. Also, when Ness is in it again, maybe Big N will finally bring over Earthbound!

So I wonder if Sakurai's going to do another Dojo for this game. I never actually got the experience of it last time since I was not on the internet yet, so I'd like a chance to feel the anticipation myself. It would be even better if he let us comment on it, but that's probably wishful thinking.

Ridley beter be a playable character, or there is gonna be hell to pay.
  • mr.max.falcon - February 21, 2012 6:16 p.m.

Not gonna happen, they'd have to scale him down too much and Nintendo doesn't do fanservice because they don't care about their fans enough to do so. That and fanservice can get annoying at times.

"Nintendo doesn't do fanservice because they don't care about their fans enough to do so." There is SO much wrong with that statement i dont know where to begin, you DO realize that Smash Bros. in itself is a Huge Fanservice.
  • Defguru7777 - February 21, 2012 8:15 p.m.

I agree with you about Ridley, but how on God's green Earth are you going to look me in the face and tell me that Super Smash Bros. itself isn't one giant package of fan service from Nintendo?
  • shawksta - February 21, 2012 8:45 p.m.

I know right? And we had Characters who died Come back to life like Ice Climber's, Pit, MR. GAMEANDWATCH, and SONIC, the MOST FAN REQUESTED CHARACTER!?!?!?!? There's no way in hell thats "Not fanservice"
  • Defguru7777 - February 21, 2012 10:36 p.m.

Don't forget Snake. And I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that Fire Emblem only came to the States because of the popularity of Roy and Marth in Melee. I don't know if that's really fanservice, but still worth noting.

I've known about this for a long time, it's more than likely going to be called Super Smash Bros. Strife, and it's probably going to have some Capcom characters too. Unfortunately Sakurai sucks at balancing and is a huge scrub, even still. But luckily he said he isn't going to balance this one. The 3DS one is going to have some sucky leveling system that you can take to the Wii U also.

Yeah yeah, keep talking just to make this game look bad, You wanna say something more pathetic?
