Seth MacFarlane was announced as host of the 2013 Academy Awards
, we naturally presumed that we’d get a raucous mixture of crude gags, expert compering and deeply offensive humour.
In his debut as the Oscars’ Master of Ceremonies, the
creator managed to bring a little bit of all three, without attracting the level of controversy many would have predicted.
It was a slick performance with a killer opening ruse (William Shatner arrived from the future to tell MacFarlane what goes wrong with his stint as host, in a sci-fi
of sorts), but not every gag hit the mark.
If you didn’t catch the ceremony, here are the ups, downs and gasp-worthily offensive moments. Judging from the split we’d say MacFarlane performed commendably, even if his set wasn’t ultimately as rib-endangering as we’d hoped for.
