20th Century Fox has announced that it will be beaming a transmission of The Day The Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly into space.

The release, targeted towards our solar system’s nearest neighbour of Alpha Centauri, will reach the system in 2012.

Cynics among you might think that this is the best thing for the film, but we’d encourage you to be nice.

Reviews in eight years

According to Fox’s domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder, the advantage is that reviews will take a while to reach us.

“We at Fox always like to think big, and what's bigger than a 'galactic' release of a major motion picture event? We look forward to sharing The Day The Earth Stood Still with our galactic neighbours near Alpha Centauri - and look forward to their feedback...eight years from now." Yes, no chance the box office will be hurt.

And isn’t interstellar travel a bit outside the remit of a domestic distribution president?

Finally, we fear this will simply encourage the ultimate act of piracy when China uses one of its satellites to capture the feed and have it on the streets by the next morning for 50p.
