Second most important E3 awards announces best of show nominees

Our very own GamesRadar E3 awards have already delivered the definitive final word on this year's show. But stay alert gamers - there's more E3 awards to come! And these are kind of a big deal. Why? Because the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2010 are voted for by 31 'professional' sites and publications that dabble in the business of critical video game reportage. And, yes, that includes GamesRadar, along with GiantBomb, Destructoid, Kotaku, Joystiq, GameSpot, IGN and a bunch of others.

So, knowing that these games have been deemed worthy by actual critics armed with professional diligence and laser-targeted expertise, you should be interested to see which games of E3 were 'best' enough to make the list of nominations.

There are 16 categories in total . There are a lot of games. I inexplicably went to the bother of counting and found that there are 47 different games nominated in total. Rage gets five nominations. Epic Mickey, Portal 2 and Dance Central all get four nominations each. EA is the best faring publisher with 15 nominations. In terms of platform nominations, Xbox 360 snags the most with 46.

How the hell did WWE Allstars get on this list??
  • Gobblemeister - July 1, 2010 2:16 a.m.

THey couldn't even throw Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 in 'Best Fighting Game' to even it out? I mean it looked pretty good, certainly worth a mention. I mean it's not like anything is going to beat the years of anticipation behind MVC3 anyway.

    > THE game that validates Kinect To who? To gamers? To the people who at a quick glance over half of those publications write for? There's a difference between playing a plastic guitar and pretending to be a rock-star, and dancing like a seven year old dizzy on lemonade and pretending that you Michael Jackson re-incarnated, pretending to be a rock-star appeals to a wide cross-section of the core-gamer demographic, and I really doubt dancing will prove to do the same. Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about the nomination, I couldn't care less, simply the attempts to justify it's presence on the list as if that list and E3 in general is all about us the core-gaming demographic, gamers big show of the year, it's not... well ok it is some gamers big show of the year, but for the life of me I can't work out why, since the stuff that we actually get to see it always... well a load of marketing B/S to be frank. You gets get to see, and thankfully report on the juicy side of E3. Lucky gits -_-

GamesRadar didn't actually nominate every game on this list, but the nominations are a collective tally of all the games that were most often nominated by the press as a whole. It's actually a really elaborate, efficient process. As for Dance Central, I suspect it's going to be THE game that validates Kinect (along with Child of Eden), so I'm only mildly surprised to see it nominated in Best of Show. It's kind of like the first Guitar Hero - you think it can't be fun enough to be worth looking as stupid as you think you do, but then you play it and it sucks you in.

    No Ghost Recon at all,Really?
  • JohnnyMaverik - June 30, 2010 6:56 p.m.

@ MattCundy It's still a motion game... about dancing... nuff said. Not that I'm blaming GR of course. Disappoint to see Deus Ex: Human Revolution didn't get more nominations, there again I have no idea what the requirements for a nomination are, so maybe it didn't qualify for some of the categories.
  • JADENkOTOR - June 30, 2010 6:51 p.m.

Everything that even showed at E3 is on that list... "Congrats you made an announcement at E3, here's your award!". I mean fuck I know not EVERY single game is on there, but someone needs to try and make it a little more elite than that. If this was the Academy Awards, Up would have got an Oscar for Best Picture...
  • Evil_AppleJuice - June 30, 2010 6:46 p.m.

There goes db1331 hatin on Tyler again.
  • CurryIsGood - June 30, 2010 6:08 p.m.

WHY ISNT PATAPON 3 ON BEST ANDHELD GAME????
  • MrDuracraft - June 30, 2010 4:52 p.m.

Okamiden was probably the GR favorite of this entire list. PLAY OKAMI GODDAMNIT!
  • db1331 - June 30, 2010 2:05 p.m.

I have it on good authority that Tyler Wilde nominated Dance Central for best game ever in the history of best games.
  • Matt Cundy - June 30, 2010 1:52 p.m.

@nighthawk205 To be honest, until this morning I didn't even know GamesRadar were on board with this Game Critics Award thing. All the sites and publications on the judges list are North American-based, so it'll be the GamesRadar US crew that have been having the dealings with the GCA.
  • Joshin69 - June 30, 2010 1:40 p.m.

But Matt, lets not also forget its a dance game? I havnt got pigtails and i dont giggle when the boys are around so its just not going to fire me up. Well OK I hav'nt played it but lets say I have yet to play a dance game i didnt want to set fire to and keep warm that way.
  • nighthawk205 - June 30, 2010 1:33 p.m.

Unlike db1331, I continued reading, but I did get quite a laugh at seeing that. Do you all nominate the nominees? This list seems quite... meh...
  • Fiirestorm21 - June 30, 2010 1:26 p.m.

Yeah, Dance Central doesn't seem completely terrible, given it's a motion game. Overall, not a single surprise on this list.
  • Matt Cundy - June 30, 2010 1:24 p.m.

@db1331 Don't forget that Dance Central won GamesRadar's 'Motion Game We Didn't Totally Hate' award. So it's got to be a bit good. However, I haven't played it and agree that it's nomination in the 'Best of Show' category seems a bit... peculiar.
  • db1331 - June 30, 2010 1:15 p.m.

"Best of Show - Dance Central (Harmonix/MTV Games/Microsoft for Xbox 360)" This is where I stopped reading.
