Sci-Fi Bargains Of The Week

DVDs, Blu-rays, books, T-shirts and, erm, a bottle opener. Steven Ellis once again finds ways to be kind to your wallet

Hello and welcome once again to our regular Friday SFX bargains round up. As we draw closer and closer to Christmas we’ve been working away like little sci-fi elves to bringing you a random selection of stocking filler ideas for the geek in your life or something on the cheap to cheer yourself up after spending all your money on presents for other people.

First off we have a selection of classic doomsday series from the BBC via Amazon starting with mobile vegetable mayhem in The Day Of The Triffids on DVD for £3.97 . Alternatively you could try the modern remake for £3.99 – this one has CGI and Eddie Izzard in it.

If you fancy a game of spot the Tripod why not try ’80s classic The Tripods ; series one and two are available on DVD for £13.49 . Shame they never adapted the third book though; there would have been hot air balloons in it.

With our last classic TV show suggestion this week you can brush up on your vegetable and beard growing skills, it’s the complete boxed set of Survivors on DVD for £21.97 .

If you’ve held off buying any Harry Potter films because you wanted a big shiny boxed set with the lot in, then now’s you chance; Play has the Harry Potter – Complete Eight Film Collection on Blu-ray for £32.30 and Amazon has the same boxed set on DVD for £20 . Actually, both sites have the Blu-ray sets for the same price, so it’s a case of pick your favourite seller there.

Another item to buy if you still don’t own it is geeky sitcom Spaced . This bumper Collectors Edition includes both series and tons of great extras; it can be yours from Amazon for £8.99 . Get it now or we’re going to have to come round your house and take your Geek card off you!

We don’t normally mention books (we really should though, books are great) in the bargains round-up, but seeing as it’s nearly Christmas and all, we thought we’d mention this offer Play is currently running. As part of its Gifts For A Fiver offer it has over 300 sci-fi and fantasy books going for less than a fiver. There’s all sorts available, from George RR Martin’s Game Of Thrones series through to Max Brooks’ World War Z , so check it out – they might have a book for you.

In our weekly wander round Asda we found a Pirates Of The Caribbean four-film boxed set for £20 , a two-disc Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part Two for £8 (I spotted it for £7 in Sainsbury’s – ed) a vanilla-looking Captain America: The First Avenger for £10 and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (you know, the one based on that Doctor Who episode) for £6 . In Blu-ray land we found aliens outside the windows with Skyline for £7 and Vikings and aliens action with Outlander for £10 .

Our own Ian Berriman found Misfits series 1 & 2 on DVD for £10.99 a few weeks back and this week Asda has it for £10 , so if you haven’t got it yet you can save that 99p. You can also pick up a big boxed set of the in-real-time TV thriller 24 for £45. That’s sci-fi isn’t it? It’s set in a world where no one goes to the toilet…

From the forum this week we have Badhat’s recommendation of The Star Wars Saga nine-disc boxed set on Blu-ray. If you fancy giving George Lucas more of your hard earned cash it can be yours from HMV for £48.00 . If you’d rather just have a laugh at the whole things then we’d suggest spending £13.99 on the Robot Chicken Star Wars Trilogy instead.

Another forum recommendation from Count Libido, who took a lead from our current Greatest Vampires Ever Poll (voting is still open) and found us a selection of bargain vampire movie goodies with a mad and crazy Lance Henriksen in Near Dark for £4.99 on Blu-ray from Play, the original Fright Night on DVD for £2.99 and vampires terrorising Alaska in 30 Days of Night for £5.49 on Blu-ray from Amazon.

Radical Edward found Green Lantern on triple play for £12 from Blockbuster and a great three-film set of Knowing , Moon and District 9 for just £8.95 from Zaavi.

From Amazon Radical also found Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within for £3.43 , Fringe seasons One to Three on Blu-ray for £42.99 , Bermuda Triangle TV thriller The Triangle on DVD for £2.99 and a two-disc special edition of Cloverfield for a bargain £2.99 . Elsewhere Jonemoongoose found Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on DVD for a fiver in their local Sainsbury’s and Robell found Stargate: The Ultimate Edition on Blu-ray for £5 in Asda.

On the random suggestion front this week, Count Libido is back with this lovely shiny Star Trek : Starship Enterprise Bottle Opener for £8.99 and in keeping with his earlier vampire theme he also found this True Blood Men’s American Vampire League T-Shirt for just £5 from Play.

If you find anything we’ve brought you this week cheaper somewhere else please mention it in the comments section below. We want as many bargains ideas for our readers as we can get. And remember; anyone out there who spots a sci-fi bargain in the coming week that they want to share, then please pop over to the forum and mention it in the relevant thread. This thread is for bargain films and this one is for TV bargains . Keep your eyes peeled for great offers for your fellow geek and maybe your find will be in the bargain list next time.
